This is a good thread, one that we can all learn from, I guess I would have rather it not been a bash to a LFS but hey, I guess you felt that way.
I cannot take sides in any direction cause I feel that the circumstances are kind of weird and there is always two sides to the coin, for example you are not telling us how did your Sis and Mom approached the store owner, did you made arrangements to bring the eel back over the phone prior to they showing up or did they just showed up with an eel in a bag and no sales ticket.
IMO, A simple phone call from you to the owner to make arrangements prior to the eel returned would have helped, there would have been a lot of questions answered from both sides that only you and him had the answers.
I can not imagine what you must have put your Mon and Sis when you asked them to go grab that long slippery eel out of your tank sice they are not exactly easy to catch, but I can almost guaranty you that they were not happy with the task and even more upset the owner was reluctant to accept the animal.
Lesson to learn;
Always research the animal you want to buy, This is easier said that done, we all fail at this at least once.
Never ask anyone else to take care of your aquarium business, trust me it never works.
Good luck in your future purchases, hope to see you coming to the meetings soon, they are very informative and full of fun.
