Impulse buy: 24g Nano

Im a sucker. for a deal. and both were present today as I purchased a 24g bio cube. It was $150 with stand from my LFS. Now I just have to tell the old lady. :strooper: They told me it was 11 months old, but it looks older than that to me. Now they got me buying LR and LS, I havnt even brought the tank home yet because I need to butter up the old lady first. I didnt want her to just come home and be suprised, but I thought about it alot. Although she does like my idea of making my other 12g aquapod in to a sea horse tank. So we will see how she tanks it. (freudian slip)
I also thought I would just throw a fish list out there just to see what people think about it:
2 Maroon Clowns
Bicolor Blenny
Some other fish?
Red Reef Lobster
Couple Crabs
Cleaner shrimp
Pepermint Shrimp
Turbo Snails

Nice deal on a good tank.

Just some thoughts:

Maroons are going to grow to be to big. I had a Clarki clown when I started out and didn't know that they get pretty big and aggressive, killed a firefish, maroons get bigger and are more aggressive than Clarki's). If you want a pair of clowns I'd stick with the percs or if you don't want the nemo look get a pair of black and white ones.
Blenny is a good choice.

Here is my stocking list.

Blue Assesor (Out in the open 24/7)

Onyx Percula Clown (juvi)

Blue Bar Pseudo (Avoid all pseudochromis and dottybacks if you want the peppermint).

Firefish- Awesome, the best nano fish. Purple ones are nice as well as the reds.

Yellow Watchman Goby (Probably would not get along with the Blenny, they are to similar).

Blue Neon Goby - Blah, small and a short lifespan, another impulse buy that I regret.

If you are going to add corals make sure that the lights are replaced. It is a good idea to swap them out every 8 months to a year.

Good luck with the new tank :)

colinadam dont you have a flame angel??

in my 24g i have a valentini puffer
flame hawkfish
and a true percula clown
and some corals and inverts

damn!!!!!!!!!!!!! why didnt I do my homework on maroons? I still want one but online everyone who even hears about maroons in a 24g all tell me that they get too big for a nano. At some website and my LFS (whom I have a good relationship with and I believe wouldnt steer me wrong) they have told me that a 24g is big enough for a maroon, I didnt tell them two but idealy that is what I would like. Another thing Ive noticed is everyone is sure to specify that females are the ones that get too large for the 24, is there a way to differentiate sexes? Im pretty sure that if I got a pair that one would definately change to female and the smaller stay male. What if I only got one? And if it was male? A maroon is pretty much the reason I got this tank. I hear lots of stories about how everyones favorite fish is their maroon. Im still on the fence. Even to the point of just buying one and if and when it gets too big sell it back or upgrade to at least a 55g. Talk about your all time fool proof excuse. Christmas is always around the corner. No maroons and no star fish, why did I buy a 24g?

I had a Flame Angel in my 24 for a month. Ate like a champ, no signs of diesese (fin rot or ich, etc...) and one day I came home from work and he was dead behind a rock. Don't have anything that could have done this to him in the tank, unknown why he died. The place I got it from isn't the highest rated LFS around, maybe he was cyanide caught or had a sickness I didn't know about.
He was a cool fish, if you get one get the smallest one you can, keep only a few other fish in there and be prepared to remove either the fish or corals if you get a nipper.

I wouldn't keep another in a 24 but that is just me, my flame was swimming all over the place, I kinda wished I could get him a bigger tank. If I ever upgrade I'd get one again.

As for the maroons I think you could keep one for a while if you find a young one. Aggression would depend on other fish in the tank. My Clarki never messed with my pseudochromis, mainly because my pseudochromis would check the Clarki if he tried that crap but also because the pseudo is always in the rockwork. I bet you could get away with 1 Maroon, a pseudo and a sand sifting goby (Like a YWG) or a Blenny and not have any problems.

I believe with clowns, if you only keep one...it will eventually turn female.

Any type of dwarf angel would still need more room than a 24g. I know, I have the 24g AP and wanted the same fish, everyone told me no. I think the only exception would be the pygmy, but I still think they need a bit more room to swim.

Good luck with the tank!

I think I am going to go with a juvinile maroon. I need one. Theres no way around it. If it calls for me to upgrade Im willing to take that chance. *feeds fish, comes back* I definately need a maroon. Or something that swims in the front of my tank and not back behind the rock. In my 12g aquapod (which Im thinking of converting to seahorse's but thats another story) I have a clown goby, a fire shrimp and some corals along with 18 lbs of lr. My goby and shrimp both hang out near the vents behind the rock because they know the brine will eventally get there. there lazy, like their owner. I need something that swims up front in the tank and is fun to watch. Gobies are only so cool. I also saw another guy had a flame angel in his 24g, Im thinking that might still be a possibility. Why'd you get one in the first place colin? I know you didnt just go out and buy one with out doing any research. or did you...........

edit: thanks for the horrible news sugarfox. females suck.

I went and took the Clarki back to an LFS, saw the Flame, spent 30 minutes debating with myself, shelled out $70 and came home with a cool fish. Not the smartest move :)

If you can find a smaller Flame and think you might upgrade to something like a 30 gallon or a 40g breeder down the road get the clown then the flame and in a year move them.

I can see myself doing the exact same thing. Only I would also make the guy at the lfs say it was ok no matter what bad things he had to say about it.
but dont tempt me. I presume its inevitable that I will eventually go bigger, only it may not be in one year, it might be two. It all depends on living arangements, cash availability, success or lack there of on my current tanks, job situation (Im thinking about going in to a business where I travel alot) etc.. For x-mas I could probally swing a tank and some lights but its the LR that concerns me. I guess $350 isnt too bad for lr (Im thinking of going 55g) but its just another commitment and I have to want to maintain three tanks. but if Im going maroon and flame angel I might as well just go with two maroons like I originally wanted.....
