So I've been thinking about adding a uv sterilization unit to my setup. Any advice? What seems to work better? The in line or the submersible ones? I noticed a few white spots on my sailfin tang and I really hope it's not ich.

In line.. There are only two that I recommend as they are both great quality and very efficient at doing what they do. AquaUV and Emperor Aquatics. Both have been making UV's for many years and their designs are proven. They work really really well when you set them up with the proper flow rate for your desired goals. Most other UV's on the market I would liken to toys and don't work nearly as well and are way overrated. Personally, I've used AquaUV's for the last 10+ years and have never had an issue and have always been very pleased with the results.
With that out of the way, I will warn you that a UV filter will not eliminate ich. It can only help with ich in it's free floating stage and can only impact those that pass through the filter. Not all of the ich parasites will ever pass through the UV. As such, don't count on that to help your battle. If you do have ich and want to cure it the guaranteed way, you will need to QT and treat all of your fish and allow your tank to go fallow for several weeks so the parasite can die off without a host. If one fish has it, the parasite will forever be present in your tank as long as untreated fish remain in the display and the display doesn't have a chance to go fishless.
I really don't think that any UVS available on the market for aquarium use will have the omph to kill any parasite. Especially an organism as complex as Ich, but I could be mistaken.
