In my absence...

I just wanted to post some helpful hints for any problems that my occur while I am gone. Tomorrow Aug 21, 2007 is my last day here until I return September 10th.

First off, it was not my intention to shut down for two weeks. I have hired a new employee who was in sales at Marine Depot and is a long time hobbyist. Unfortunately, his move to Texas was delayed and we both felt it was unwise for him to start without sufficient training. Anyway, Rodney "wartskin" will be checking in here periodically as will the guys from AquaDepot. My vacation is one week work, one week play. For the first half I will be working at the factory and will have email contact and I will also check in when I can, for the second half I will have almost no contact. If you have something to send in, my warehouse guy will still be here recieving shipments and he may periodically answer the phone but he is not a hobbyist and doesn't do repairs. He is an old friend and basically he fell on hard times after getting out of the military some years back so I hired him to do shipping and recieving. That is all he does, so please be kind if he tries to help but he really doesn't know the products and much besides signing for the box and putting stuff away there is not much he can do.

Second, if something breaks, stay calm. I realize as hobbyists we invest a lot of time and money in our aquariums but nothing can be fixed by any amount of screaming and crying so just deal with the situation the best you can. If your pump breaks, certainly most hobbyists have closets full of old equipment they upgraded from, if you have no such stockpile certainly a friend or the LFS likely does, just borrow a pump to get you buy and I will get you pump repaired ASAP. Likely I will come back to at least a weeks worth of repairs and spare parts requests so I will not be able to keep to the 48hr turnaround though I will do my best to work as quickly as possible.

Some simple fixes and common misconceptions.

"My skimmer broke, everything is going to die!" Nonsense, run some carbon or better yet a polyfilter, a couple weeks without a skimmer is not a life or death situation.

"The clip on my nano stream is broken." When I get back I will send a clip, for the time being if the tabs on the back broke use hot glue or silicon to adhere it to the magnet, these peel off easily when the new clip arrives. If the arms broke, zip tie the pump to the magnet. I will actually be spending a fair amount of my time in Germany working to get this problem resolved permanently with a new clip.

"My pump is broken, everything is going to die!" This is true if you don't act, as I said, most hobbyists have spares, while your old powerheads may not be as strong they are better than nothing. If you don't have spares likely your LFS or a friend does. Get some flow going to get you by until I get back. If you have no spares, consider buying some, for something so critical it is foolish to not have a spare. They don't have to be anything fancy, a couple $20 pumps will do the job in a pinch.

"I need a spare part!" - Please contact one of our dealers, between Marine Depot, Premium Aquatics and Reef Exotics you can likely find most commonly needed spare parts in stock. Many of our LFS's also stock spare parts.

If you must reach me, you can call the factory in Penzberg, keep in mind that they are 7 hours ahead of CDT as they are in the Central Europe Daylight Savings Time. Basically, you have to call by 9:30 AM from US Central time zone. Phone is 011-49-8856-2022. Such a call can be rather expensive if you do not have international calling so please do so only if it is critical. You can also email the factory off of the tunze.com web page and they will contact me. Yes, they speak English.

Our shipping address-

Tunze USA
305 Victor St
Austin, TX 78753

Please do not call in my absence as the machine can only hold 30 messages and no one will get them until I get back.

woot! Have a safe trip. I was about to post that my clip was broken, good thing I read stickys first!

Here are my clip pictures.

I have it ziptied to my seaswirl for now (you guys should try this, it's pretty cool) but I would like to mount it on the wall again before its all over with. Keep us posted about the new clip.

Thanks!

There is only one guys avalible to help us with our problems?? wow. not good.

Well, when Roger is here it only makes two. :)

Keep in mind that our industry is not big by any means, and most of your high end manufacturers are small operations, and a lot of times 1-2 man operations at that.

And when he is here I think he does the work of at least 5 people it seems.... and that might be an understatement some days :)

In all seriousness I dont think there is any need for concern, Roger gives almost unparalleled service to his customers

Very true...It's amazing how one person can make you feel like you have a whole team full of people to deal with your problems!

P.S....one of my arms for my NanoStream broke this past week...will drop you a line when you return!

I now just silicone my clip to the magnet assembly and find it works fine and doesn't look bad at all. I think it was good move that I will keep permanent.

In good news I saw the blue print for the new clip and besides being almost impossible to remove from the magnet I think it will permanently solve this issue. It will take a few months to get the new mold made and clips ready but in the meantime they are nearly doubling the thickness of the tabs on the clip, this should start next week and this will be a temporary fix until the new clip can be put into production.

I also have hired someone to help out but he could not start in time to be sufficiently trained to help in my absence. In the future this should not happen again. In 7 years I have never been absent for more than 2 weeks a year, usually for trade shows overseas. This was my first real vacation in over 10 years and even then I spent the entire two weeks with Mr. and Mrs. Tunze so a fair amount of work was accomplished that was needed to correct problems like the clip.

Roger - Welcome home. good news about the nano clips??? But is it only the clip that is being strengthened or both the clips and the C-Clamp itself?

I have 2 x 6055s both less than 3 months old. The clips attaching clamp to the magnet broke on one and the C-Clamp split on both now. Graeme at AquaDepot has kindly sent me a temporary used replacement for one and the other I've siliconed and tied.
Since Tunze have accepted that the design/production of the original clips is poor, could you please relate what steps they intend taking to recall and replace all the original nano clamps and recompense owners who have suffered breakages. Will all existing owners be sent replacement clamps or will individual warranty claims be required? Whilst this and other forums are informal channels for communication, will Tunze be making a more formal announcement through their global distributors on this issue?

Martin

To start I think this needs to be put in persepctive. From what I have seen about 10% of clips break, the vast majority the tabs break, braking arms is pretty rare and usually due to a badly overheated part. They break not because the design is truly faulty but because the design is beyond the capability of our molding machines to consistently produce properly. They get burned in the mold. The Lexan is plenty strong and I have seen clamps that were perfectly made be thrown across the room, slammed on a table and curled into an O in the palm of the hand and not break. The reason it took so long to address this was exactly that, we could not break the samples and the first reports came from the US (the pumps came out first in the US) and transport and handling was initially blamed. Lexan is one of the strongest plastics, unfortunately when burned it becomes carbon which is not to strong. There will be no formal recall.

In about 4 weeks we should have a stop gap fix, thicker tabs.

In a few months we will have a new clip design that will utilize the large holes in the magnet holder to clamp to.

The arms will likely be widened slightly but this breakage issue can be controlled by more careful programming of the molding machine and more thorough inspection during a batch run and it is infrequent enough that I don't see at as being a major issue that needs further redesign, especially since any major change will compromise other features and needs of the part like ease of use and movement of the pump.

Basically, if your clamp breaks within the two year warranty period you will be sent the current replacement.

Welcome back Roger. I have to say I loved your first post in this thread.

That kind of message should be posted everywhere weekly. :D
