That just saved me alot of trouble. Just found out all 55 gallon tanks are tempered. so its a nogo.

I've never drilled a 55, but I've heard that not all of them are tempered (on the sides). I could be wrong on that though. Would a 60 gallon (4" taller) work?

If you can find a 75, I believe the bottom is the only side tempered on them. I've drilled them successfully, along with 10, 20, and 29 gallon tanks.

Love the Avatar!!!! Yeah i guess i have to save this tank for a future project or run the pump so it needs to be primed to use it. Its my luck. if i don't use it i will pass along the deal to anyone looking for a sump that can be used with a submersible pump. I am supposed to be getting a 40 gallon tomorrow. I was hoping to use that for a fuge or qt tank though. that can be drilled. So i have to make a decision. From your experience using a good high speed hand held drill work? Or should i just let someone else do it.

I use my DeWalt cordless drill and never had a problem. I've drilled a dozen or so holes. Go slow rpm, don't put weight into the drill (just use the drill's weight), use water to cool everything, and make a plywood or 1"x2" guide. I've got to drill another 10 gallon tank. I was planning on taking a video of it so others can see how I do it. Maybe I'll do that Sunday.

I won't be available this weekend, but if it can wait until next weekend, I should be around. It will take us between 5 and 10 minutes per hole. I live in Irondequoit, just off of 590. If you want to meet up next weekend, let me know.
