IN STOCK (for now!): Kessil A160WE Tuna Blue

Hi Blackbear,

A single A160WE should be fine for soft corals. If you are using the gooseneck, you will also want to use the angle adapter so you can elevate the light a little higher to get a wider coverage. Do keep in mind the two ends of the tank will be slightly dimmer: however, it should be fine for soft corals.

I have a nano reef currently running T5s and I'm wanting to swap to LEDS. The dimensions of the display is 20 long 12 wide and 20 deep. Is 1 a160we enough to keep all lps I currently have hammers and I'm aiming to go all hammer/torches/frogspawns.

Hi BryceReef,

For LPS corals, the Kessil A160WE should work well for your aquarium.

We love euphyllia corals:love2: One of our staff has a nice euphyllia garden in his tank.

Hi, I have a 55G tank with dimensions 28"Lx20"Wx24"H.
I can't get my mind set on which LED to choose.
2 A160 or 1 A360, NE or WE.
Even AI Hydra seens to be an option.

Most doubt I have is about penetration till bottom of the tank.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Janci,

A 28" wide tank with a 24" depth can indeed be a little tricky to light. The A360WE would give you a better combination of coverage and penetration compared to two A160WE's or an A360N. However, we would expect intensity to drop off towards the two sides of the aquarium: which is fine for a mixed reef but will limit what you're able to keep on the sides of the aquarium.

An Hydra 52 would also be a good option. It will give you better coverage and better penetration compare to a single A360WE. However, it also does cost more.

If the aquarium is 3' wide and is a mixed reef, you can get away with two A160WE's.

If the aquarium is 4' wide and/or if you are looking to keep a lot of SPS corals, the better option would then be two A360WE's.

I have a 55 gallon, 48"long, 13"wide, and 20" tall tank. could I get away with using two Kessil A160we lights? I will host lPS corals, no SPS. if I could swing the A360we I would, but cant right now

The A160WE's covers 20" x 20" very well. Beyond that, the intensity will begin to drop off. Since LPS corals do not require nearly as much light as SPS corals, you should be fine. Just keep in mind that there will be areas of the tank that will be dimmer: which would actually be great for some of the lower-light chalices.

Thank you! So I have to make sure the coral is within 20" of the light, correct?

Basically, the two A160WE's should cover 40". Since the tank is 48" long, there will be roughly 8" that will be darker. Depending on the placement of the two lights, that 8" may be towards the middle or towards the edges. You just need to make sure to place the corals where there is light.

I hope that helps!

I'm sorry, I understood that. I was referring to the depth, the actual height of the light to the distance of the coral (up and down, not side to side). I thank you for your time. I'm definitely sold on the kessils with you :)

Guess I should mention, I have them mounted 8" over the tank with the only shadows being the upper corners where my powerheads are anyway.

I have 2 160we's over a 55 and growing everything you can imagine. LPS, softies, multiple SPS, and RBTAs.

Thanks for sharing that with me. That makes me feel even better! 8" above thee tank, I will remember that. I will come by your profile and have a peek if you don't mind.

I have a 90 gallon 48in long and I have three of the 160's. What is the max depth you would put any sps in a set up like this?

Hello Reeferjo,

Thank you for considering us for your aquarium advice. The Kessil A160 has a light penetration of about 24 inches when it comes to keeping coral. This however is ideal for a fish only/ soft coral set up. If keeping SPS I would definitely consider keeping them in the upper half of your aquarium. Please keep in mind that water parameters are crucial for SPS along with acclimation to the light. SPS coral also ranges in difficulty levels within the category.
