in sump skimmer depth

I have a asm g1x skimmer, it sits in about 11-12" of water in my sump, its been going for 5-6 months now in my tank, all I ever get out of it is green water type skimmate, I have adjusted it left and right and that is all I get... in another thread someone mentioned they have their asm in 8" of water and get brown gunk in there skimmer.. does the depth the skimmer sits in make a big difference? How do you adjust how deep it sits? mine skimmer just sits in my sump, no way to adjust the water depth.

you can put it on a platform. mine sits on a platforme made from ege crate material from hom depo. the stuff is white and can be found with the lights. it is like $10 for a large peice. just cut it out and use zipties to hold it together. it is in the sump so no one will see the geto platform it is on.

so the depth does matter? what is a typical depth? (btw I just got some egg crate today for the top of my tank, to replace the glass tops I have now, I should have extra to use as a stand).

as fir the depth needed with that one in not shere. i have read that people keep them in like 6-8 in of H2O and have good luck with them.

alright. just made a stand outta the egg crate, the skimmer is in 8" of water now, see how that goes, thanks!!

no problem. i know that when i moved mine up in the water colem it took about a day or two for it to start produsing. good luck and happy reefing

My G3 is in 7 inches of water, it pulls out stinky funky crud. Stinks up the house pretty bad when I empty it.

I am seeing brown along the top of the tube before falls into the cup, good sign so far! thanks again.

IMO six to eight onches is perfect. Use an auto top off if you can water level is critical to consistant skimmer performance

the section the skimmer is does not change water level, its in my intake section, then it goes to the fuge section then return section, only the return section is effected by evaporation. Although I would like to add a top off system regardless, but have no room to store 5+ gallons of water anywhere near the tank. ahh well
