Increasing Coraline Growth

Wondering if products like Purple Up work?? My tank is very established and corals do well, but coraline is almost non-existent. I know some of you wish yours would go, but rock looks better when covered nicely. ANY SUGGESTIONS??

from all the reviews I have read it does work, but takes some time. My Brother used purple up and had coraline on everything, had to work to make sure it didnt cover all the glass. I have Purple Tech from Kent I will start using shortly, but it will be a while before I see anything.

At $8 a bottle for the purple tech I figured it wouldnt hurt me to try it out.

Depending on the size of your display. I would only add very little purple up( drops). I made the mistake before of adding to much. It goes along way. It will also crank up your calcuim.

Is there any coraline in your tank currently? Make sure your calcium levels are good and maybe scrape some coraline off a rock to disperse it. I think sps dominant tanks have very little coraline growth as well since most of the calcium gets absorbed by the coral.

Purple up is a waste. It's simply a Ca and Mg additive, with some added silica sand (seriously).

Where do you keep your big 3, especially Mg?

Coralline algae can be hit or miss. Coralline doesn't like bright white light but likes the dimmer actinic light. Introduce a source of coralline and use a lot of water movement

I agree Purple Up is a waste of money

I think salt is a factor too. Since I used coral pro, I've had a lot of coraline growth, with the addition of med to high water flow. Adding purple tech, purple up, etc helped me with the coralline growth but at the same time caused me a slight hair algae problem.

+1. If you have your mag, calcium & alk right the coralline will be there, & you will wish it wasn't lol.

Get some coralline shavings from someone. (I peel mine off in sheets like wallpaper) While keeping it in water, break it up as fine as you can. Pour the pulverized coralline into your tank. If your water parameters are in check, it should pop up everywhere. JP

I am at a +2 on this point. Anything in my tank (including overflows) is covered in coraline, and I am constantly scraping it off the glass.

I was always told that as long as Ca and Mg are high enough and in proportion that coraline would be there.

The point about SPS competing for it is an interesting one i haven't heard, but it makes sense. My current tank does not have SPS in it, so that may be why I have never had that issue come up.

You don't have anything in your tank that munches corraline do you? I never saw corraline development until I removed all of my urchins.

Nothing that eats it. My tank is predominately SPS so maybe they are using up all the calcium. I add Bionic 2-part. There is some Coraline, but would like to see a little more. I will test mg and see if there is an adjustment to be made. Thanks for input, for now probably leave well enough alone. :)
