Hey everyone, I am interested in jawfish. I'm not sure yet which species I want yet. But I have a few questions, I was wondering how it would do in a tank with only crushed coral? I know these fish need sand but has anyone ever tried JUST cc? Anyone have any cool pictures of there jawfish they could share? Also does anyone know a good site to learn about them?

Thanks everyone :wavehand:

You are going to need a substrate for jawfish. I will try and post what I used later. As far as jawfish the trick is to get them from a great source like KP Aquatics and buy juveniles. Or if you are set on Blue Spots once again only buy juveniles.

Carib Sea Sea Floor Super Reef for Yellow Heads and Pearly's and or Aruba Puka Shell Fine for Blue spots mixed with some sand

Hahah thsts a cool picture, it looks like it built a fort lol. It looks like you have some pretty largesized subsystem there. Is that crushed coral mixed with sand? I'll check to see what i bought later tonight, maybe I have the right kind. I'm just worried the peices are too big, maybe ill take a picture of it and post it on here.

It is the Carib Sea Super Floor with a little bit of Puka Shell. My Pearly here in my office when he was younger would destroy his home and rebuild it in about an hour. It was amazing how fast they can build there home when they have the right material.

I have attached pictures of my Pearly so you can see the mix of Puka and special grade sand. Also you will notice the lack of yellow on the Pearly's versus the Yellow Heads. If you order from KP Aquatics you get the yellows if you order from your fish store you will probably get the Pearly?

That's pretty much the type of crushed coral I have, so it should do fine then. I'm thinking i want the blue spotted jawfish, I think ill add a little bit of sand to the mix though so it fills in the gaps. What do you guys think about the compatability of jawfish with young tangs?

Also, is it ok to use wild shells I found on the beach? And rocks too? I should just boil them right?

You have some cool pics too!

The only issue with having fish and a jawfish is making sure the jawfish gets enough. The only fish that I added that was a problem with my jawfish was a vey small copperband, for some reason he did not like the jawfish and would dive bomb when I fed. He went back to the store
