hey.. im thinking getting a sump.. and i was wondering whats a good overflow box? whats the difference between each ones and how can you tell what a good overflow box can do?

All the same IME, you just need to find a way to get water down to the sump, you can use a u-tube by itself literally....But I have this one. Its silent and I havent had any problems with it.

Dang my supplier from ebay ran out of them Ill post link when I find it.

Are you going to get a HOB or go internal and drill your tank? Just be sure that it can handle your rated return pump GPM/H and you'll be fine.

Definatley what Ken added.

Make sure the pump you get isnt to powerfull, youll need a valve if you do and it will make the pump loud.

im going to get a hang on the back.. right now im thinking about the u-tube way.. seems like it'll save me a lot more money, it you said its silent.. and thats what i need, hopefully i can set up my system so i dont get any splash noises

You'll still get the spash noise

Find a way to install on of these to teh drain in yout HOB filter.

That Y piece u see down there is very thick It minimizes the splash noise its SCH80.

In all honesty... if you can of course... get a tank with a built in overflow. I've heard too many horror stories about HOB overflows flooding the house.

If your getting a HOB, be sure there is enough room in the drain section that you can install a stockman stand pipe if needed to silence it.

The reason I said "rated GPM/H" is if your pump is rated at 700 GPH, and your overflow is rated at 700 GPH, reality is, with head pressure and elbows, your pump is probably putting out 500 GPH, then you won't have to put in a balancing valve.

His tank is glass. But hell yes! Built in Overflow when I get my dream tank!;)

Nice job on the overflow. Lifereef stuff cost to much. This guy has gone way over-broad. There has been a lot of nice RR tanks for sell in the last couple of weeks. I would think about buying one of those if you really want a good overflow setup.
Just my opinion.

i just got my 100 gal tank USED from another RC member and it has a built in center overflow on it currently...the only issue here is that i cant seem to prevent the tank from OVER FLOWING, if the cap that is on top of the "U Tube" is in place, i get wet carpet... the original owner said that because the hole on the top of the cap is too big, he thinks its not priming and that i should re-do the hole...i filled the hole with putty, and started to enlarge the hole little by little, it did improve the rate of drain into the sump, but the end result would still be WET CARPET just not as fast as before when the hole was a bit larger...
So i guess what i am trying to say is...I NEED SOME ADVICE*!

I have a lifereef for sale if you are interested. It is the smaller model which is rated I believe at 700-800gph.
I can let it go for $50

Salt e , how big a pump are you running? most single U tubes will handle 600 gph or less.

im not too sure at the moment...i gave the pump back to the original owner to fix.... when i set the tank up it was buzzing and the sound would soon start to bother me since the tank is in my room... but the brand is Little Giant...

depending on the outcome of the little giant i might be interested in to other pump you have FS:...

but from what i understand the pump is the one that he was originally usin to run the tank before he sold it to me...the plumbing is set up and built for that pump so im guessing that its not the pump being too strong for the tank or any plumbing issues...might it just be that the sump or what ever it is; just isn't priming?
