Info on Tulip Anemone

thats funny you posted this. i saw it on ebay yesterday too. I hope someone chimes in, they raised my curiosity

I've googled and not come up with too much. I did find this short reply on another forum, but that's about it.

"From your picture and description I would say you have what is commonly called tulip anemones. They are very striking in their own right. They can be a pest due to their fast rate of growth/reproduction, but do not worry as they do not pack a coral killing punch like Aiptasia"

I have a few of these guys in all my SW tanks. They're similar in size to Majanos, but I don't find them to be pests - they don't bother my corals, multiply slowly (unless you spot feed them and then watch out) and IME they tend to enjoy sticking together; eventually you can end up with a single rock covered in 1/2" nems; it's actually quite pretty.
That said, I wouldn't pay for one any more than I'd pay for a Majano. Mine came from a LFS tank; they were a trade-in. The rock was labeled 'tulip polyps' and priced at $85. I told the manager they were actually anemones, he suddenly decided they were pests and couldn't wait to get rid of them! He gave me one no charge, and now I've got quite a few.

I bought 3 of them a year ago, they took over a large zoo rock, not killing them but crowding them out, I just killed over 100 in the tank with kalk and water.
They multiply like crazy and are addorable but will take over other corals if left to there devises.

Tulips

Tulips

I've got a pair of them in my 100 gallon and so far so good.
They were a toss-in from another local reefer who was tearing down their tank.
They seem to be very hardy, and I spot fed them once and they were voracious!
They don't seem to be too picky about lighting either. I had them up high in the tank under 4x96PC's and they were happy and then I tried them a little lower and they didn't care at all that I had moved them.
I've got a lot of room in my tank so if they spread a bit it isn't a problem for me.

Thanks for the warning!
I don't have any SPS in my system and wasn't really planning on it.
I've got some zoas and two smallish frogspawns and a chalice coral and some hairy green mushrooms and two RBTA's.
I'm definitely keeping a close eye on them. Although I keep a close eye on everything, I can't tear my eyes away from the tank some days!
