Initial planning stages for tank and fish room

The really cool thing about the new background? I can still view the tank from each side :) There was no need to put the plexi on the sides. With the lights off in the fishroom, there's is virtually nothing behind the tank that is viewable from the front. The sides appear just as the back does. I'm happy about that because I like viewing the tank from different angles to see what's happening inside.

A pic from the side.

I guess Safari and youtube don't play well together. Posted this using Firefox and no issues.

Have read the entire thread and just wanted to say very nice job. I am setting up a 180 in wall right now. We had an old wet bar that has been convereted into my fish room. So with the tank in the wall i dont have much room. I can fit a step stool behind the tank that all the room i have back there.

Plan to do my best i can with the space i have but dont think i can make it looks as good at yours with the limited space.

If I could just say the overal color profile of your tank is to die for. Spectacular choice in lighting. I know kessils and proper camera white balance play a big part in it, but if I may ask, what is your BML color layout? You may have posted it and I missed it but what was the pattern for each 12" section?

Thanks Harry. It doesn't have the cool effects you did with it, so I add some music to the video instead of listening to the pumps in the background. :)

Thanks too Redfish Bpb and Glane. Yeah space was at a premium for me too Redfish. Looked for was to enhance it. The upper rear cabinets are actually set into the wall about 10" or it would have made it uncomfortable to work on the counter or walk behind the tank. That enabled me to put the lower cabinets over the counter and use the upper cabinets as bas cabinets. I also cut the cabinets I used for the base, down to 10" for space considerations. They're just deep enough to fit 1g jugs. Maybe I'll do a video of the fishroom since I already got my feet wet - sorta' speak :) - with the tank video. I think worm has been requesting that. All I can advise is to draw everything out first and then start to look for ways to hide what doesn't need regular servicing and maintenance and see if there's any space that can be utilized more efficiently.

Bpb I'm not really sure of the BML configuration other than I ordered the super actinics and they added violet and UV to them - at their suggestion, as they said others were seeing nice results with them. The coloration in the video is accurate and as it appears to the eye. I wasn't able to figure out if I could set the WB for video so I just went ahead and filmed it.

Any ideas on what these are that are decimating my very nice red dragon that was growing so well? :(

They have attacked the red dragon and a large bird of paradise colony :( I have not made any additions to the tank in over 5 months. This has occurred in the last 4-5 days. Can frozen foods introduce nasties?

Not likely from frozen foods (thawing generally causes cell walls to collapse). But they could have come in on something else like snails' shells, live rock, gut contents of a new fish that wasn't quarantined, or perhaps they were incubating unseen for a very long time. Would need a better close-up to guess what they are.

Hey Bill,
My advice is to take the coral colony out then take either one of two courses throw out or try to save.

I'd take a baster and blow off. You'll see the worm wiggle in a snake like manner because they can't really swim. Looks like AFEW in my opinion.

An update here.

Only an anecdotal supposition, but I think the issues I had with the Red Dragon and two other colonies was cause by two things - less flow due to taking two MP40s offline for cleaning and not getting them back into the tank in a timely manner. The small critters on the RD in the above pics ended up being vermetid snails that took hold on the exposed skeleton. I've since fragged the RD into two smaller colonies and they're ding just fine.

I think small colonies and/or frags can do OK with less flow, but larger colonies cannot respirate well under that condition and start to suffer. Just a supposition, but there appears to be no other explanation as everything else were doing fine, exhibiting good color, growth and PE. I've since re-instated the MP40s and things are back to normal.

I recently joined in a group buy of some really nice maricultured corals from Fiji. We received them overnight directly from the farm. Though in the past I've not had great luck with maricultured corals, these are doing well after a week of being in the system. Below are some pics.

Very nice pieces, congrats!
Hey Harry. Thanks. Was pretty busy this Summer with all sorts of things. I have to get back into some club activities. I saw the video on the swap. It looked really well conceived and like a lot of fun. Sorry I missed it. :(

Just a couple of random shots from the side.

Things are going pretty well I'm really happy with the lighting. Corals are growing and have really good color, but I have a Valonia issue. Trying to deal with it by manual removal, but that's not fun. I've also started a Tech M regimen which I hope will help.

Has anyone had success with a Foxface or Rabbit fish in eliminating Valonia?

I found emerald crabs to be the most effective, but you have to give them time. They are slow but they are thorough.
