Initial startup costs to setup a 50gal octo tank?

Generally speaking, how much would I be looking at for starting a 50 gal octo tank? I'm just looking to see the ballpark range. This should include tank, stand, sump or w/d, materials to octoproof the tank, and soforth. Exclude the price of the octo.

I've never set up a sump but you'll probably be spending 300-400 bucks on tank, stand and lid. Probably closer to the 400 range. Then you're going to need a great deal of live rock so probably another 200 for that. The sumps probably going to cost a lot too.

Thanks for the reply.

I have never setup a SW tank before but I do have 3 years exp. raising rare predatory FW fish.

Would you guys think it would be okay to startoff into the field of SW with an octopus off the bat?

Ummm.....Ive been researching into the octopus thing for about 2 weeks now, and from what I understand, starting right off with an octopus without any SW experience sounds bad.......just my 2 cents...

It would be best to spend a few months learning how to keep your water parameters in check and let your tank get very well established with micro fauna. You need to know your equipment and understand how capable an octopus is when it comes to destruction and escaping so that you can properly secure the tank before you get one.

If you can find a local aquarium society in your area you can probably buy everything you need used and much cheaper.

Once established, they aren't too hard to keep, but you want to make damn sure your tank is stable.
