inTank Media Basket

Just keep swimming
Hi Everyone,

I have a 14 Gallon BioCube thats a year old & something caught my eye. I known these media baskets are to replace your bioballs but am a little scared & have some questions..

I know you can just take out the Bio-Balls but im sure my tank will have an effect, some have mentioned taking out a few a day. So whats the best approach?

I also read that people are taking out the floors in the back chambers. Whats the deal with this?

So all around... would you convert? If you have done it please fill me in!

Thanks!

I never put the bioballs in when I started up my tank... but the reason to take out a few at a time over several days is that you want the liverock in the display time to grow a bacteria culture replacing what was on the bioballs.

You have to remove the false floors to fit the media racks in. Plus, I bet when you break yours off, you'll notice quite a bit of detritus built up back there.

The media racks work great. A lot of people have built their own out of acrylic or egg crate, however I found the expense of the intank ones to be worth it. they are very well designed.

I use 2 racks... one with filter floss, chemi-pure elite and purigen, and the second with cheato as a refugium. working great so far.

Oh one question I forgot to mention!

What will the water level be like? I don't want a loud trickle noise..

I mean about how many inches of water will there be in the chambers? I know the inlet chamber (where filter was) is always full but the pump chamber & the middle will probably be different?

i just got my intank media basket for my friends 29 bc today. it is very nicely made. will be installing this and the aqua life 115 skimmer this week.
you also need to "break" off the tab next to the bc filter, to allow more flow and get the drip tray to fit.
also from what i'm told, pay no attention to the min and max water level on the side of the tank.
i'm new to the bc's, but my friend wanted one and i told him i would help. i myself have a 75 gal, so this will be a new adventure for me.
there are tons of threads for mods on these things. you would think oceanic would have incorporated all these into the cubes by now. i also heard that they are coming out with hinges for the lids on the new ones, but they will not retro fit onto older cubes.

I got my Intank media rack last week, running the filter floss/chem-pure elite/purigen. The rack is very well constructed and seems to be filtering very well. I am going to be using the now empty chamber #2 for a "refugium", rubble on the bottom with chaeto and a submersible light.

I have a JBJ 24

I've got a BC14 with the media basket running filter floss, Chemi-Pure Elite, and chaeto in that order and I like it a lot. If you have the flow director included with the basket and filter floss in the first level you won't hear any water dripping at all. As another poster said don't pay any attention to the max/min water level after the bioballs are gone - the point of the "maximum" water level is to create a trickle filter effect for the bioballs but you won't need that anymore :)

They have done for some things. My BC14 came with an open window into chamber 2 whereas older models would have needed paint scrapped off to support a fuge light.

I ordered mine today for my BC29. I'm looking forward to everything getting a little quieter and getting rid of the bioballs.

Luckily the new ones come with the water direction pieces.
