im trying to treat my 30 gallon for red bugs. i dont have a dog, so i cant get the interceptor pills from the local vet.

i was looking on ebay for interceptor pills and there seems to be a lot of heart worm medicine, its just not interceptor. theres pills made by frontline and heartgard.

so im wondering if i can use any heartworm medication or do i have to use interceptor?

Just take a printout on the red bug/interceptor phenomenon to your vet and they should be OK giving you the meds. I don't have a dog and it wasn't a big deal, although I had to call around a bit to find a friendly one. The nurses were a bit confused at first but it's really no big deal, it's not like you're going to go cook up some interceptor and post up on the corner.

its the active ingredent in interceptor that kills red bugs others wont work. it took me a week to get some but well worth the effort. like reef monkey said have a print out of the dosing with pics of the bugs and bring it with you to the vet. i had to go to 8 vets before one was able to get me the med.

I used a different brand of dog heart worm medicine with the same active ingredient as Interceptor and it killed all the red bugs I had. I don't know the name off hand but make sure the active ingredient is the same.

reef-daddy, sent you a PM.

i did notice the active ingredient, but i could not find if it was in other brands or not. anyway, thanks for the help guys. maybe ill print out the treatment and bring it by my local vet sometime this week.
