Interceptor Update and Trifexis as Substitute?

Does anyone know if Interceptor (milbemycin oxime) is back in production? If not, is Trifexis (milbemycin oxime + spinosad) a suitable system-wide substitute? I did a quick search of Trifexis and did not come up with much. I want to know if using Trifexis is a suitable alternative for Interceptor before I give my vet a call and ask for Interceptor, and being offered Trifexis as a substitute.

I spoke with the manuf. just now and they wont make any for several more months. there is no data that trifexis is reef safe. due to the spinosad.

I would not use Spinosad in a display tank. Spinosad is not easily broken down in water unless exposed to sunlight. Half life of Spinosad in water is around 150 to 200 days without exposure to light. The EPA has declared Spinosad moderately toxic to fish, and slightly to moderately toxic to aquatic invertebrates, and HIGHLY TOXIC to mollusks.
I am a Veterinarian and have had discussions with the vets at Elanco (Manufacturer) about using Trifexis as an alernative to Interceptor. Not enough trials have been done to recommend it as an alternative.

I have been using the Interceptor Spectrum/ praziquantrel. It has worked well and easy to turn to a power with just your fingers.

Good to know, thanks for sharing that information.

I found it was difficult to dissolve in water. For my second treatment, I ground up the chew tab into as fine a powder as I could (the tabs are a bit moist though, so it all sticks together). I then boiled RO/DI water as opposed to mixing it in room temperature RO/DI, and it dissolved much better. I waited for it to cool down a bit before adding to the tank obviously.

Good information, I have not been able to find Interceptor anywhere as well. I'll be ordering the Interceptor Spectrum/ praziquantrel chew tabs.

I'd be careful here....many large organic compounds can be heat labile...boiling might reduce potency

jroovers do you have any feather worms etc.? There was some suggestion that the prazi would kill them. I need to treat but have lots of feather worms that I don't really want to loose so am concerned. Also does anyone know if this has any effect on fish that eat pods, i.e. a mandarin?

Well said my colleague

I finally gave in and treated with interceptor spectrum and can say that after first dose I can see no redbugs. I treated at 2.3 mg per 10 gals. The big dog pill is 23 mg and according to numerous post on this site treats 400 gals. The small dog pill is 2.3 mg. I have many small feather worms and they were unaffected by the prazi. The only losses were 2 small acro crabs that I couldn't get out. We'll see what the repeat doses do.

Thanks Tripdad, I'm waiting on my Meds i got from JoePetMeds? im not sure if its a scam but i did get a email saying it was shipped.. I will also make a DIY thread about it so others will know and we will one day have to not worry about RB again
