Interesting 4000gal tank of Mr.4000

Canadian,

I disagree. His fish load (granted is tiny right now) is going to be hard pressed to be as dense as a regular tank. Let's take the 120g I have. When done I'll have 30 fish or so. That'll be nearly 1000 fish to maintain the same bioload. Further, his sand area has far more open area so the open sand bed is larger than most smaller tanks. Then in terms of the open water column this is definitely larger than most private tanks. Look closely at the picture where he's standing up. There's not live rock down there (that I could tell). So, the water to bio load ratio is far higher.

Cheers,
Matthew

earlier i was thinking about how truly insane it is to own a 4000 gallon tank and something occured to me. my 90 gallon evaporates about 3 gallons a day. if the same rate applied to a 4000 gallon tank that would be 133.33 gallons per day of evaporation.

all i have to ask is what kinda ro unit do you use for that. i mean, it took my little kent maxxima 4 days to fill my tank. yours would be empty before you made enough water for a week of topoff.

do you just purchase ro/di by the tankerload and keep one parked in your driveway all the time.

i'd really like to see some of the cost engineering on this baby.

$ of live rock
$ of instant ocean
$ of sand

good god. did you win the lotta?

i'm definitly not worthy.

just one question. what exactly do you do for a living?????

I jump infront of fast-moving cars and sue the driver. :blown:

How much will you end up spending on such a huge aquarium??? 4000 gallons is EXTREMELY large and expenses will be too. Just building and filling it up must have cost a ton of money. Here are some ideas for fish, and you can put tons of fish in a tank that size.
maroon clown or two
sohal tang
powder blue tang
clown tang
5 or 6 regal tangs
more yellow tangs
emperor angel
majestic angel
blueface angel
conspicuous angel
some sixline wrasses
yellow coris wrasse or two or 3
some cleaner wrasses
royal gramma
some dwarf angels
10 or 20 chromis
some scooter blennies and mandarins
and so on...

With such a large tank, your options are incredible. Of course, some of these require a mature tank.

I've posted more Q&A on my site.I'm trying to get everybody's questions answered.I'm putting new ones on every night so check back and if you dont see an answer to your question let me know and i will be glad to post one.

So I showed my wife the Mr. 4000 Website...it went something like this.

NC: Honey come hear.
Mrs. NC: Now what, more fish stuff?
NC: You got to see this...
Mrs. NC: He's in the tank!
NC: Now that is an aquarium.
Mrs. NC: Just like the Zoo.
NC: You thought I was out of control?
Mrs. NC: You are and don't think about it!
NC: (Pause. Refects and thinks of the possibilities) ...but...
Mrs. NC: (with THE LOOK) I know you're thinking. Stop it!

A tank this size is a very large personal commitment, and, I hope that it brings nothing but the rewards and joy you expect. :) That said, Sweet Tank!

Later,
NC

If i was to condone keeping a mandarin in anything it would be that tank. it'll take the colerfull little fella a 100 years to eat all the munchies in that tank.

Hey if it doesnt work out. You could always drain it, throw a cooling unit on it, and use it for a walk in cooler for beer! hehehehe jk ;)

I think we all owe him a thank-you. I showed my wife also and now she is happy with my 170 and what I spend on it. :D

My tank is 70 gallons. Compared to yours, it's a NANO! I've never seen anything like that in my life. Except some tanks at the public aquarium in Baltimore. You could practically charge admission for yours :)

Hum, I have an unfinished basement. I was gogin to move doen there and have a 75 gallon, but why not something bigger!! Too bad the poject got canned...

Awesome Tank!! I wish I could spend hours interacting with my fish like that!!

:)

So... It is now May of 2005. Any status on what happened with Mr.4000's tank? Very curious mind(s) want to know before venturing too far down that path. :) His web site seems to be off line. Any status reports? I heard one mention of mold but how about details? Did the mold get taken care of? Is the tank okay and fairing well?

Is there pics of his old set-up anywhere around? Mr. 4000, can you show off a little?!? :) I've been lookin for stuff, but just found some german site!

WOW, destroyed his house... that sucks.... why couldn't he re do his circulation in his home to move out the humdity...

His house is the reason we even talk about whole house circulation, heat exchangers, massive dehumidifyers, and the like. No one really did anything on this scale before him, well they may have, but it wasn't advertised on the internet. Alot of big tanks have been built on sun porches and add-ons so they don't affect the house as much as one that's in the basement. I believe his website has been archived on Google, that's where everyone keeps getting the pics from.
