Interesting read

The Ryan that hasnt been posting or around because he works just about everyday mid state lol

Yeah Mike, def. a stepping stone. Getting my training, certifications, and experience.

Good article. My most common question in a LFS is...How much is this, how much is that?? A word of advice to any LFS people reading this...if the prices are not clearly marked, you are hurting your business. It is actually a peeve of mine when no prices are labeled in a reef store. It wastes the employees time, and frustrates the customers. I know I tend to shop more often, and spend more, in a store with clearly marked prices.

My go to is a bit of haul for me, but have been known to be there every weekend dropping hundreds of dollars a pop. I am on a bit of a break currently however as my tank is growing into each other with nightly coral fights. I feel bad just going and not buying everything just to BS, even though I know the crew and owner insist on it lol. If only he would set up that lounge for Mike and I

Yeah I hate when they don't have prices on what they sell. I don't want to have to ask for a price 10 times while i'm in the store. This makes me avoid the store all together.

I agree with the pricing, but I'd estimate at latest 80% of people disregard the price and ask for much lower prices.hugely irritating.the prices aren't written there for fun, they're there for a reason.the more someone asks for a lower price the more I want to raise it lol makes me think I should have put higher prices on tanks just to start the"bidding"higher.it's not an auction.regulars get better pricing for showing loyalty. Obviously listed pricing is important and not everyone tries to auction. Just a peeve of mine.when I did this I didn't do the math to figure out what an item cost after shipping packing etc then research what a good price the item is, hop around marking tanks just to have people disregard the price. If you go to a store just keep in mind prices makes were thought out and aren't a suggestion.you might get better deals just by not asking for a deal on everything.

Don't want to make it a debate but just because it was brought up.I started this thread to show the article and hope people might get inspired to help out your lfs and show support. Hopefully the thread goes that route.

I actually agree with both sides of the issue. I just got into the hobby in November. I had horrible luck with freshwater but let's face it, I relied on advice from petco and did no online research. If I knew what I knew know I wouldn't have bought the canister. I do clean it once a week and change out the white pads. No nitrate spikes in 6 months. I spent a lot of time talking to the owner of a LFS in CT. I already had the 40G breeder from Petco but needed everything else. Probably spent 1k there. Light, protein skimmer, heater, canister filter, live rock, sand, salt. In fairness on the canister I told him that I wanted to over filtrate this setup and wanted everything to live and not die due to user error. After I got everything I went online and everything was $50-$100 cheaper. I probably would have saved $250 if I went that route. I ended up returning the light but keeping everything else. I think I saved $50 on the light. I felt that with his advise and the time he spent with me it was worth spending the extra money with him. Since then I've bought a bunch of my stuff online - dry food, filter media, mag float.

I buy all my livestock at the store. Don't love the idea of living creatures getting shipped in a bag. Maybe that's how the LFS get them I have no idea but I like seeing them in the tanks in person.

I am happy to say I haven't lost a fish. I only have 3 in my 40G breeder. I am gonna upgrade tanks and am waiting. I am actually working with another LFS who has all individual filtrations on over 100 tanks. I've researched his prices online and the overhead is much lower. I am gonna buy sand and Rock from him so he'll make money there. And also I will have to fill this tank with corals and fish.

So I will continue to buy stuff at the LFS and online. I can't tell you how nice it was calling the store when I had an issue and they were happy to talk me through it.

Steve

Sorry I am typing on my phone. I added the line about the canister filter at the end but pasted it in the wrong spot. Lol. The canister is with my saltwater setup. :)

The price thing isn't the deal breaker by any means. Besides Ryan gave it away most of the time. Shhh, don't tell Bob lol

I'm going to stay out of the debate side of this one, but I will say this:

Ryan is/was the $@/!, but Justin has taken the reins at Bobs and is taking care of us quite well!

Ryan IS the !?&@! And he is most definitely missed around the fish room!
Pat, thanks bro! You two are welcome to hang anytime, I don't care if you spend a dime!

And Mike, just you wait buddy... Oh, just you wait! ;)

Oh yeah, who's this paulywalnuts guy? Anybody ever meet him in person? I think he's a troll...

Too busy with work!( like Ryan) lol Wahhh! All over the state:( don't have time to text or say hi. Only to post on reefcentral. Matter of fact, I'm coming to see you today bro.!!

The asking for a lower price thing is the nature of certain stores...but, not all. I remember back at puppy center. A $20 tank, $30 tank...etc. Never thought to ask for a lower price. I knew what I had in my pocket...and which tanks could accommodate that. In Bob's store...the price question has always been the way. Even the owner before Bob used to do it. Got cash...I can do better on the price, seemed to be his motto. That is the way that store has always been run. Those of us who have shopped there forever are just used to it. That is the business model that has kept it going all these years. I think 80% of the people who shop there ask for the lower price, because we have been trained to do it by both owners. Again... nothing wrong with it, it's just the vibe of the store.

Ahahaahhh, troll, that is just too funny. And whats this, Mike is getting his lounge?? I'm there, and keep the beer next to the coral food lol

The owner before Bob? Hasn't Bob had that store for like 18 years or something?

I think if I keep asking about it...it will eventually come...or they will just put out a fold out chair with my name on it...either way I'm happy.

Hmmm, I usually just pick out some stuff and then the LFS guy will tell me "I can give it to you for this" Its usually a package deal

Apparently its the "vibe" of every store I have worked at or known of because it happens the same amount of time everywhere lol
LOL...sounds true. I know that some stores I feel comfortable asking, and some I don't. But, it does exist in other, retail small businesses. It is not exclusive to our hobby. Say the word cash...and watch how quickly prices can drop.
