interesting things to add?

How interesting do you want to get?

:eek2: :lmao:

that might be a bit too much haha

i came home today to one of my feather dusters having blown off his feathers, it had moved itself snug up to a rock, i assume the hermits picked on it.

one of the 2 still has its feathers though, i moved it to a safer spot.

is there a way to make sure hes still in his tube? i dont see anything for about an inch into the tube, do they come out when its dark if they dont have feathers?

Hey guys, i have a 55g tank, and i'm looking for maybe a few more things to add that are interesting to watch.

current inhabitants:
1 perc clown
1 damsel purple/yellow, trying to rehome currently.
bunch of blue leg hermits
1 scarlet hermit
2 feather duster works, larger size and one tiny one on the rocks about the size of a dime
a few nassarius snails
and a larger snail, turbo maybe? not entirely positive.

eventually i'd like to add some mushrooms to the tank aswell.

anyway, is there anything else i can add that would be fun to watch? i will eventually add another perc clown, and maybe 1 or 2 other fish, but im not in a large rush for fish. i get a kick out of all the other critters.

some kind of shrimp maybe? peppermint?

i'm very open to recommendations. i wouldnt mind keeping 1 small emerald crab around, would one of those hurt the feather dusters though?

I personally enjoy watching my yellowhead jawfish pop in and out of their burrows. It always appears as if they are doing a coordinated dance until a clown comes over the rock and they pretend to act tough.

Going mostly soft coral tank

So far My tank inhabitants now are:
1 perc clown
1 damsel ( trying to rehome still )
2 feather dusters + random little ones everywhere
1 little colony of zoas
3 mushrooms
3"x3" tuft of gsp
2 small sections of xenia
1 serpent star
1 emerald crab
1 porcelain anemone crab
assortment of narsarius snails and hermit crabs plus a large turbo snail

still looking to add:
1 midas blenny
1 diamond goby
possibly a second perc clown to make a pair** i
a shrimp of some sort, either blood/fire shrimp or a cleaner shrimp

i would also love to add an assortment of any of these:
carpet anenome
torch coral and/or hammer
few more assorted colors of mushrooms
another breed of xenia
1 or 2 more small frags of zoas of other colors
some version of some branch or tree type coral

not saying ill get them all, its just my ongoing list, I am still open to interesting ideas!

I seen a purple lobster the other day at the lfs, and it looks very awesome, i just wish it didn't get so huge when adult.

A fire shrimp can be a hoot to watch, but mostly at feeding time. He runs around the tank like a madman trying to score some of the good stuff!

Totally agree! I have a cleaner shrimp as well as a peppermint shrimp and at feeding times, they are hilarious to watch. When not feeding, they latch onto some rock and it looks like they are dancing to their own music in the current.

My cleaner does the same thing. I was beginning to think he might be crazy. :spin1: He hangs out on a rock overhang swaying to the beat of his own drum.

Any other off the wall interesting or weird things?

I thought about sea cucumber too, but i think with my smaller tank a sand sifting goby and a cucumber might be too much? would i risk starving them by having both?

id advise against peppermint shrimp or the emeral crab. if you ever get lps that need direct feeding they will harrass them to death.

i had a baby emerald crab i dropped in my last tank and 3 months later he came out looking like the hulk trying to grab everything and storm the place.

yellow headed goby will clean your substrate but also remove zooplankton. so that is whatever you want. however if you have a coral on the sand bed he will cover it up.

just some experiences of my own.

yellow watchman and pistol are fine with a cleaner shrimp btw. (my experience)

i actually already have an emerald, but he was just a little guy, i also have a porcelain crab, they are very fun to watch. and i havn't had any problems feeding thus far, thankfully. but i only have a very few number of soft corals at the moment.

porcelein is fine. in fact they can be symbiotic with RBTA.

keep an eye on that emerald crab. there is a reason a lot of us reefers dont trust those pesky things ;)

yeah i've seen the horror stories, but theres also alot of neutral or positive stories too, they are like a wildcard lol. I figure i'd hold onto him until he gets bigger, then either sump him, or trade him in for store credit.

I always enjoy watching my urchin move around the tank. They are pretty fun. I also agree on the shrimp goby pair. I have never heard of any problems with a randalls pistol shrimp and very few with the Tigers. With that size tank you are even on the low end for a marine betta which are always interesting.

i thought about an urchin, but my rock is all loose, and i don't want it to knock stuff over.

side note, one of my 2 feather dusters commited suicide 2 days ago, it must be in too high of flow? it crawled out of its tube i assume looking for a new area.

it was immediately gobbled up by bristle worms and my serpent star. i do not believe it was dead, so i dont know why it did it. the other one is still alive and well.

How big are your rocks? The concern with them is more with frags. An urchin isn't going to pull down rock work if it's any decent size.

oh, everything i have besides my small rock with xenia is 2-3 lbs, or better.

if thats the case then I might look into that aswell, but im not a big fan of the pin cushion ones, are any of the more crazy looking long pointer ones safe?

Yeah they won't move that. You would be fine. If you get any corals on a frag plug glue them down but mostly they will pick up small shells.

I like tuxedos personally. I think with the long spine ones I would personally worry about bumping into them in the tank.

I would deff go pistol shrimp and goby pair. I love my yasha goby. I would stay away from the carpet anemone for sure. Anemones are not the easiest thing to keep and carpets can be real a holes. Careful with what little fish you add with the emerald crab as they can be pretty mean too.

Keep an eye on it. Feather dusters will often "toss their crown" when stressed. Usually they grow a new one fairly quickly. Sometimes they are so stressed they die, but I have never had one die in my tank afterwards.

Lots of interesting ideas so far. I have a yellow watchman goby and tiger shrimp pair that are awesome fun to watch, especially if I have moved anything and collapsed part of their burrow. The shrimp looks like a little excavator tractor pushing dirt out of the hole and pilling it outside, while the goby "stands guard" and watches someone else do the work! The tiger shrimp is the exact same size as the goby, and never any problems, although I have heard stories, especially from sk8r, about hers killing of it's goby.

I am also a big fan of shrimp except coral banded. They get bigger and will try to pick off small fish eventually.
