Internal or External Pump ?

So the winter project is a new sump (40g breeder) which I am relocating to the basement. It will sit almost directly under the DT on the first floor with about 10' of head height.
Other than having to drill the new sump, is there any reason not to go with an external pump.

I personally am not a big fan of the submersible pumps that are strong enough to handle that kind of head. You can get better flow with external pressure rated pump that can use the same or less electric.

I think you'll be happier with the choices you'll have for an external pump. The submersables will also give off somme heat you may or may not like.

Any pump brand recommendations ? Also does anyone know if I can get the diamond hole saw drill bit locally, I know I cant get it on eBay for about $10.

I've only used blueline pumps, and I've been every happy with them. I have a genx that I'm going to try (about half the wattage), but I've heard mixed reviews about their noise level.

I don't know where to get a new bit locally.

I use the Iwaki 100. It's not super quiet but it's in the basement . I've had 6 years trouble free. High psi and it delivers a lot of water at about 12 feet of total head in my case.

When I had my 180 running, I had my 120 sump dirrectly below the DT. I ran a Baracuda which was awsome!!! I would recomend it.

I vote for Sequence Reeflo or blueline. The Reeflo will be more energy efficient and give you higher flow, and quiet, but...there's the issue with their seals eventually needing to be replaced.

Bluelines are nice & quiet too but energy to output isn't as efficient. Depending on size, cost might be close. I'd run a used Blueline any day, but a used Sequence would make me nervous that it wasn't flushed properly leaving the seal in question.

Hi Chris I use a iwki 100 in the basement with no problems and have a blue line for a spare [your frags are doing fine in my tank] thanks
