introducing my 870gal tank (pics ahead)

ahh, forgot that..

invincible,

you mentioned putting the coral directly on the sandbed.
I put the SPS that you see near the bottom on flat stones, but the $%&§$%& gobys
dig the sand over the stones. Takes them an hour after cleaning *curse*.

:-) Ralf

ok ralfp, now you really done it. i'm jealous. modern look is the way to go, hopefully when i'm done it will look just as pretty..could you post more pic's behind the scenes of sump, frag and etc.

thanks skipper, but that's how I found his thread. your right next door to me about 2hrs. its been awhile since we been back up there playing golf at canebrake club and now its private, but timberton and shadow ridge has a nice track.

and yet my Aqua-Medic T5 array is really sweet. go figure! Anyway, my Aquamedic Reefdoser is still hanging on the wall. I guess I should trash it but one of my reef buddies is telling me to sell it on eBay. I don't know if I feel comfortable doing that though.

Tank looks stunning. I tell you I quit using socks a few months ago because I changed out my sumps to much larger ones, and I don't have a good spot for them. And, I hate changing out socks every 3 days. But I have paid the price for sure. My tank water quality is not pristine (although not bad either) and my aiptasia problem began when I removed the socks. I have been planning on building a floss shelf, but just haven't made the time yet. :(

Thanks, you're too nice.
I'am just the usual reef-mad, messing around with too much water and salt,
but reading through this thread makes me feel somehow special :-). Thanks for that!

cbui2,
regarding the "modernistic" look, I think the tank and it's surrounding should fit into the look
of the rest of the room/house. In my case, the strict, reduced look and the colours and materials
(steel shadow gap etc.) are to be found in the rest of the house also.
The view rests inside the tank, because the surroundings look like everyting else around.
More pics will follow, but "behind the scenes" there are no big changes compared to the
TOTMs pics. Some barrels got bigger, the fragtank pics are already around...
As I like to be visited to trade frags, most of the time there are actual pics of them at http://www.cashh.de/frags/.
Unfortunately just pushed in the fragtank and not placed thoughtfully.

jnarowe,
I know what you mean regarding the filtersocks, I clean them in the washing-machine now,
what works quite well.

Ralf: your tank is among my top favorites. I love it!!

Mine too Skipper!

Ralf, I understand what you mean about the gobies causing sand storms. Love the idea of having flat stones for each coral. I also love the full room shot. Thats my favorite. Love the style. Keep up the good work. You have a lot of fans!

RalfP, your tank is my top 3 all time favorite tank! Love everything of it! I was reading your TOTM article to find out what kind of sand and how big the grain you were using. I love the look of your sand and i am about to buy sand for my tank. Thank you!

Richard

Hi Richard,

Thank you very much.
Its fine Live Sand,
the brand is "Ecosystems Live Sand" with 0.5-1.7mm grainsize.
In my fragtank I use Ecosystems Live Sand with 1.0 -3.5 mm grains.
Without the sandmoving critters (cucumbers/starfish/gobies/snails/etc.) the surface
(esp. that of the fine sand) tends to stick together and forms a very hard surface with
fouling sand under it. Maybe the cause is the high Ca addition, but I am not willing to
change that and the sand-critters do a good job, so there is no need to change.

One warning, if your watermovement pumps are directed to the ground or directly to the
frontglass, the sand may blow away.

good luck!
Ralf

Thank you very much RalfP! I will look into it! Any reason to go with Live sand other than no need to clean it?

In the past, I also used the "dead" coral gravel, but have never seen it that fine.
You're right, I wanted white sand, that keeps white.
I used the Live sand in a new set up system and thought it would add some usefull bakteria to
it and help cycling the tank faster, keeping biodiversity as high as possible from day 1.
As I also used good precycled liverock, I can't say if there really is a positive effect from the sand.
I never had any detectable amounts of PO4/NH4/NO2 in the system and only very very low NO3 only in the first few days.

Ralf

Great to know your point of view! I will keep in consideration in my purchase for sand! Thank you!

ok ralfp, if you are running out of space please let me know. i can help free up some real estates.:lolspin:

all I can say is absolutely STUNNING!!!! I can only dream about a setup and tank like that!!!

Thank you so much for sharing!

One question - How is a clam considered a frag :D :D :D.

Just kiddin' I agree that your frag tank looks better than 90% + of full reef tanks.
