introducing my 870gal tank (pics ahead)

I know this sounds crazy, but I actually prefered the look of your tank in your first post, I think you had captured a real feel of scale and space. Now the corals have grown in so well, they make the tank appear smaller. I guess you can always frag away and get back to more space. Either way your tank is an inspiration, it's as good as it gets!

Great to still have that amazing feedback from you!

dn100 and triunfo,
welcome! and special thanks to you for coming out of the dark for my tank!

jonbry123,
but its totally understandable, thanks a lot! Please also forgive my spelling :-),
As I get replies, it seems to be understandable, too. Looking at my own postings,
I myself discover so many errors :(.

MGB,
I understand, what you mean. The surgeonfishes start to swim mainly in the right part of the
tank with less coral, think they feel like you do ;-).
Unfortunately I love the growing SPS a lot, showing their natural growing-forms, which can't be detected in the smaller frags.
Hard to judge for a SPS-mad, like me... Maybe a little more extensive "gardening" would
bring us closer together. It's quite new to me, being faced with too many, too big SPS :-).
Thank you for that view, I wasn't able to see that, maybe because of the continuous changing size, if looking every day at it.

danskim,
your fault, you asked for fragtankpics, so you'll get them now :-)
Well, nothing special I think. Part of the Tridacna maximas there are parked for someone,
some of them are growing to be put into the Maintank somewhen.

ok ralfp you are definitely running out of frag tank space :D. your frag display looks better then my entire setup:) so many nice and beautiful clams. what kind of clam by itself located in the front, look about 6-7", maxima?

You're right, thats also a maxima and you got the right size also.
The bigger ones seem to be big enough to also develop eggs and not only sperm, like
the young ones do. I already got some serotonine (hopefully the right word in english) derivates
from a body-building supply to tickle them. I talked to a T. maxima breeder (ocean based grow) and will try some experiments in the future. More after the next steps, for now I try to "not talk about unlaied eggs" (like a German saying says).

Generally I think, that Germans (at least me :-) can learn a lot about plumbing and waterflow
installations from US tanks. And yours seems to be somewhere on top of that.
The importance of more/better waterflow if there is more light, to support growth, has not
stepped fully through Germany.

Well, don't fear, that I run out of frag-tank-space. I'am already thinking (and not only thinking) about a seperate system. I like the idea of having a kind of backup / experiment system to not bother the Maintank. There is another small room in the cellar :-).

Thanks,

those rimless display are awesome, give you give us some more info on them? what's the other tanks against?

Magnificent Ralf!
Absolutely flawless system, coral growth is spectacular. Glad to see you've avoided putting any large fish in your reef it gives a nice sense of proportion, even with all that growth the tank still looks big.

Did you ever get the Harton dosing pumps? Or are you still using the AM Quad reefdoser?

i have to admit this is one of the best tanks i have seen.... nice job bud =) you outdid yourself... this have must have cost u a fortune lol well done! (love the clams btw they have to be my favorite!)

First time in this forum and glad I came across this magnificent tank. Had my eyes glued to my monitor through out all 13 pages I just read. Thanks for sharing

RalfP, it keeps on getting better, you make it look really easy. A question on your new set up in your spare room... why use a calcium reactor now after your success with the balling method? Do you still have a macroalgae sump in your main system?

Hi,
unfortunately I do not have enough english words to say "thank you" in enough different ways. ;-)

cbul2,
the clam-tank and also the 2 in the cellar are made of glass and 100x50x50cm big.
There is an overflow box with two bottom drillings (overflow/emergency overflow)
for 32mm pipes and a small Tunze pump for water movement.
The overflow box is only 40cm high to keep the waterlevel lower.
Thats safer, when messing around with the frags.
The tanks rest on 2x2cm Aluminium frame with metal-core joints.
The tanks opposite (not to be seen fully on the pics) are 100*3l boxes with young, growing
Betta splendens (freshwater), which I bread. (Crowntails and Halfmoons for those, who know
what I am talking about :-) ). 100 Boxes, because the fighting-fish males would kill each other if not raised in a different box.

Baros,
thank you. Yes, thats enough fish. There are too many coral for larger fish ;-).
Yes, I now have 4 of the Harton hose-pumps (industrial/lab use) and am very glad
with them. Fauna Marin is thinking about selling similar pumps in the near future in their
"Ultra" line, if I understood right.
They really dose exactly the same volume each time.
The AMs unfortunately never did what they should :-(.

aspinn,
well, yes ;-)

martinezhbr,
huh, 13 pages... Think I should also read through them again, thats quite a long time ago.

dn100,
the calcium reactor question is really easy to be answered: because it is there.
Else I would have to buy some dosage-pumps.
I started my last maintank with this Schuran reactor and coral also grew well,
using artificial Ca-filling with some Mg-additions and pH-control.
I will check Ca/Mg/KH weekly as always and correct them with "Balling". That should work.
Btw, the Schuran skimmer on the floor is also the one from my prior maintaink.

edit: nearly forgot the macroalgae. They are still there, but currently the partition is
only half filled with algae. Some Hermits are living there now(don't know where they are from :-).

hah it doesnt surprise me that you are from germany with the cleanliness and perfection with the installation. What part of hamburg are you from? (just wondering, my grandparents live in hamburg)
Beautiful setup IMO!

shuskins,
trust me, I know a lot of german guys, who doesn't fit into your description ;-).
But yes, I think that, if you're running a larger tank, organisation and keeping ahead
of the chaos is really important to be able to run it with less efford.
I'am living in the west part of Hamburg, between Rissen and Blankenese in
5 min. walking distance to the river Elbe.

beutiful tank. my 180g will never compair. If you could post some pic of the filltration system........

taavis,
on page 1 of this thread, there are some pics of filtration/uv/plumbing etc.,
is this sufficient for your needs?
The original setup (ok, some hosepumps and containersize changed) is still running.
Basically a filtersock (< 200y) and a Bubbleking skimmer and some UV.
Some descriptions in textform are in the TOTM article here: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-08/totm/index.php .

Thank you,
Ralf

Still one of my absolute favourites, thanks for keeping us updated Ralf!
