introducing my 870gal tank (pics ahead)

wow :-),

oysterman,
pls. don't stop reefkeeping.
Currently I am keeping one adult and several small Sepia bandensis in a seperate system connected to my fragtank system in the basement.
My wife loves handfeeding the adult one ;-)

hookup,
with a relative low amount of fish/feeding for the volume and high coral-load, I don't think that I need a nutrient export system like ultralith, zeovit or other filters with a zeolith type of mineral, bacteria etc.
Well, maybe I could achieve more china looking colors with that, but imho also the risk of getting too low on nutrients.
Without using such a system or absorbers, I have no PO4 nor NO3 detectable.
Reducing traceelements and adding NO3 brought back the colors I like.
As I use several hundret kilos of the Balling chemicals a year, I buy them in larger amounts and not the faunamarin bags, but thats nearly the same system.
I don't have the algae partition anymore. Once a year, I add a box of LR in the "clearwater" chamber of my filter and give the old LR away. I hope that keeps biodiversity (bacteria) up.

Best,
Ralf

This tank is my inspiration.
It took some time, but now I remember, were I read your name first.
There was a discussion, admiring your tank in my "home"forum in Germany.

I have to confess, I am a little jealous regarding the clean and well-arranged
watermanagement you did with your tank.

Hi Ralf
Wonderful Tank!!! You mentioned that you add new LR once a year to improve bacteria and fauna diversity which is really a good idea. How do you prevent introducing pests like flatworms, redbugs etc into the system? Have you ever had redbugs or acro eating flatworms in your system? If so, how did u deal with it? I am having some redbug issues in my system right now(about the same size as yours)

WOW.... just stumbled over this thread. I can only hope to make my tank that nice in the future.

I'd love to see more pics of the maintence side of the tank, as thats where I am working on currently while building my 750 gallon tank.

Now that right there is an ideal worth stealing... First i've ever heard of doing that. I'm also setup that way, and could easily do the same thing... Thanks for the tip.

I also worry about having my nutrients too low... NO3 seems to have it's place in the aquarium... Thanks for discussing.

I agree this tank and build has to be my favorite one of all !!! Absolutely beautiful. Has the most realistic looking enviorment out of them all. Keep up the great work.:D

You have rivaled chingchai and nineball(peters) tanks with this one my friend and I beleive even tied with their kindness, gratitude towards other reefers, willing to help others with questions, and having a extremely well thought out, detailed, planned, and thoroughly awe inspiring tank. I can't even imagine the amount of effort that went into planning and making the plans on paper become water inside glass. Or shall I say true beauty inside glass, my hat is off to you ralf...

It would be interesting to see how this tank has matured in the year. An updatewould be appreciated. :)
