introducing "scampi"

I name all of my fish.

Bitey, snappers, grandpa nommers, mr fabulous, freckles, scribbles, kaylee, harley, veronica, sergeant major wiggins, thing one, thing two"¦

Mine tend to rhyme, I have Osiris the o.scyllarus, Tina Ternatensis, Billy the Ciliata, Kadabra the Glabrous (disappeared from my tank and was hiding in a rock in my peacock tank, reappeared a whole week later and I caught it), Kira the Chiragra, An as yet unnamed smithii, penny the blenny, Toby the goby and crystal the pistol.

Dr. Caldwell said that he has never really had a case of one busting out of an aquarium. Over many many years and millions of stomatopods it took for tanks to finally wear out and begin chipping.

It happens less than once in a life time were they break the glass.. just lay an acrylic sheet on the bottom incase they decide to dig down.

that's good to know because i don't particularly like acrylic. i did put a piece of plexiglass on the bottom of the tank.

this guy is a ravenous eater. i haven't seen him bury any food or take it into his burrow. only once did he indicate by a well placed punch that he wasn't interested in that piece of shrimp. LOL

introducing "scampi"

I put acrylic on the bottom of mine. I was so glad I did because the first day that I got her she immediately started digging through the substrate on the bottom and then punching the piece of acrylic. So now mine has a large sheet all across the bottom that is siliconed in place and then it has another smaller piece outside both entrances because I had some left over. It's too easy of an insurance policy not to use it, IMO

i haven't seen him do a lot of digging but i do see where he has been moving rubble around while i was at work today. i might see if i can find some of those big colorful marbles and toss a couple in for him to play with.

he is spending a lot of time outside his burrow just hanging at the front glass. i wonder what he thinks when my danes look into the tank. olivia will stand with her nose almost up against the glass. :)

minimum tank size, as i understand it, is 40g. unfortunately, scampi didn't live long with me. he died a couple of days ago. i'm guessing he was malnourished by the time i got him. he had lived in a pet store tank for 4 months and was fed nothing but guppies.

i may try another one, haven't decided yet. but, if i do, i will order from a reputable source.
