2 Hydor Nano 425's
Hydor ETH 300W external heater
Sugar Sized Caribsea sand

40 gallons of water, started with tap
I have a RO/DI unit and now do a 4 gallon WC weekly and only dose with Stronium. ( not even sure why )

and yep I'm a Newb so be gentle haha

Nice to meet everyone.

3 Emeralds ( should've went with Sally's )
I think thats everything

Welcome, crabs aren't necessary but if your going to have them the emeralds are a much better choice. I try not to add anything I don't test for, the mandarins are not the best choice for such a small and new system(they starve in even the biggest most mature systems). You came to the right place though, lots of good advice and even better people.

Agree on the mandarin. I tried one six years ago in a 125 that had lots of pods and it still starved. Won't do that again. Beautiful fish but not for a home aquarium IMO.

Yep, never add anything you can't test for accurately.

Only slight disagreement... I like to try and replicate a slice of a reef. That includes all sorts of critters including crabs. I have a few in my tank and think they add some diversity. Yeah, they walk on the corals every now and then but isn't that what happens on a real reef every day...

And yes, people here are pretty nice. Sometimes blunt, but with good intentions.

Welcome.

Just reread... One 300 watt heater on that set up is risky. Recommend two smaller heaters. If that 300 sticks, your tank will cook pretty quickly.

first off welcome very nice setup. secondly the mandarian's are ORA so that means they are eating pellet for sure and easier to get on frozen. so they are great picks for a tank now. all the beauty but no fuss over training to eat frozen. hope you enjoy our little part of the world and if you need any help don't be afraid to ask!

Thanks so much for all the welcomes and advice. Its very nice to find a community just about the only thing I didn't like about reefing was I have no friends to compare notes with

Oh and yes my ORA Mandarians eat frozen all day big and fat. I love them the tank wouldn't be the same without them

Thanks,
Jason

Welcome. Sounds like you have the mandarians under control, but they arn't as bad as everone says I have 2.My oldest one is prob. the oldest fish in my system he's not ORA(neither of them are) I've seen him pick at frozen once or twice but he realy only eats pods,my other one i've never seen near the frozen and he is in my seahorse tank with no refuge(so i'm surprised their are enough pods to go around) and they are both fat and happy. Their have been afew times where they got a little on the skinny side so I hatched out some brine shrimp to supplement the pods. But with all fish some have success one place where another fails(I have certain fish I can't keep so I stopped trying-like the strawberry basslet)

Yea I've noticed what works for one setup doesn't always work. Thanks to forums like this I get to try other peoples ideas thanks for the warm greeting

Welcome. we'll try to avoid performing to the expectations of your RC name.
