Iodine Dip way too stressful.

Ive recently started dipping all newly aquired in Tropic Marin Pro Coral Cure which is Iodine. After dipping the sps they almost always looks nearly dead. It takes 24 hours before I get any polyp extension back from them and a few days before the corals come back. Im only dipping for about 8 minutes.

Im looking into trying coral cleanse by julian sprung which is supposed to be not stressful, does this red bugs or AEFW?

Any alternatives to iodine?

I use lugols which from my understanding is as strong of a free iodine source as they come and I have seen ZERO stress from 15 minute dipping on any sps. I use the kent recommended dip dose of 40 drops per gallon (well I use 10 drops and a .25 gallons).

Give Coralrx a try. It works really well to knock off any pests with minimal stress to the coral. It even works for zoa eating nudis. It's worked very well for me in the past.

Used Brightwell Lugols, for 10min (as per the instructions) and immediately noticed things "jump" off my small zoa colony. Not sure what it/they are, but are extremely small and made tiny clumps in the bottom of the container.

Zoa's sprang right to life 10 minutes under light.

Be sure to wash off with SW. Not sure if you do or not.


This isn't a SPS dip, but I am hoping to be continuing the use of Lugols down the road on my SPS. And I went for 20 drops, when it said to use 30 per gallon. Since it was my first time dipping corals.

My vote goes for TLF Revive. It's not as harsh as Iodine.

Im trying to find out if doing Lugols or something else to a Christmas tree worm Porites would kill the Christmas Tree worms?

I just bought a nice piece of CTW (christmas tree worms) rock and I just wanted to do a quick dip to kill off any unwanted pests. ie. redbugs, flatworms...

Im worried however, that it will hurt/kill the CTW if I use Lugol's

Anyone have a clue here?

Use CoralRx - I tried this product and it works amazingly - smells the same as revive but it actually kills all of the pests rather than stunning them.

Any type of iodine dip is very harsh - I will never use these again.

Too true, had the same issue with rtn, especially with deepwaters.

IMO, Tropic Marin, although apparently the harshest, is the best. You just have to carefully monitor the conditions to make sure that the coral isn't stressed too much.

I typically see polyp extension return in a few hours after dipping. Some corals are more sensitive than others, but I so far haven't lost a single SPS to the dip.

could you share how you're using the Tropic Marin product? Maybe I was using it in too high a concentration, or for too long, but I noticed some ill effects. I'm assuming I did something wrong as I'm sure TM produces a great product. I've been afraid to dip since.

Marine Melafix for me. It's aggressive on the pest but not the coral.

IME when using an iodine based product on SPS, the SPS tends to absorb or take on the color of the iodine. For me it's taken several weeks for the SPS to fully return all of it's color.

I use Lugol's on zoa's and CoralRX on SPS.

I dip with lugols (per kent instructions. something like 40 drops per gallon...or 10 drops per quart in my case) for 15 minutes for all sps with no effect on health.
Does TMPCC require diluting in water? perhaps the solutiion is just too concentrated.

I've had this happen to me. I did a 10 min dip and a couple corals RTN'd on me the next several days. I was lucky to save a couple.

I do a 5 min Revive with turkey baster now.

CoralRX works great for SPS

I use Revive or Prazipro. Personally I like the Prazi. It kills flatworms dead and it isn't harsh on the corals. I have mixed extreme doses with no ill effects. Revive will knock the FWs off but it doesn't seem to kill them. Not quickly anyhow. Iodine kills more corals than it save IMHO. TMPCC is just a diluted iodine with a high price. Lugols can stress/kill/ or even stain corals. I haven't tried CoralRX but I have heard some good things.
