iodine increases growth?

I heard that dosing iodine in increased levels encourages mushrooms to split. Is this because they become stressed or becasue the iodine triggers a reproduction mechanism?

drummereef gives great advice

if you have inverts that molt in your tank increased iodine levels can stress them and force them to molt more often too

I think your assumption is correct. Many people will start doing or dosing something to their tank, see something that they like to see, and think that it is positive. Iodine dosing and molting crustaceans were long thought that iodine molting was a good thing. Those that are educated know that the reason they molt is actually to get rid of the excess iodine off of them before it becomes lethal. The same can possibly be said is true about things like mushrooms splitting due to excessive iodine. What is currently in our synthetic salt mixes are more than enough, and as long as you do water changes like you're supposed to, you'll probably never need to add iodine to a general reef tank.

i just was talking to my boss about my shrooms not splitting and she told me about a guy who dosed iodine and his shrooms do nothing but split.

I toy with a bit of iodine every few months, a very tiny ammount because i have shrimp in my softie tank. I never notice anything at all when it is dosed, but like i said i only use a few drops. I have read it will increase polyp extension and aid with splitting, i cant confirm either.
