iphone thread

here I go again.. one of the least tech savvy guys around (yours truly) asking for help!

This was kinda kewl... I got my iphone from a Verizon store managed by a URS person. It was completely coincidental.
(I won't mention his name... I'll let him chime in if he wants to.)

First off.. this phone is really kewl. I'm sure that I've barely scratched the surface of it's capabilities. It blows away all the other phones I've ever had.

But iphone could be better!

First off, I have big fat fingers. Turning the phone sideways increases the keypad area but it's not enough for me. Is there a way to make the keys even bigger?

Second, the ring tones aren't loud enough. I'm oftentimes in loud environments. And it doesn't keep alerting the user thaere's a new message the way the flashing light on a Blackberry does. Is there a way to make the standard ring tone even louder than the volume button allows?

Third, what is "jailbreaking" an iphone? Is it useful?

please don't text me..... respond in this thread :spin3:

Can't help you with your Polish Sausage fingers, but perhaps you might consider downgrading to a Jitterbug. Large buttons and loud tones are just the ticket!

Interested in "jailbreaking" too ;)

1) no

2) download louder ringtones, or pierce the speaker cover with a pin.

3) custom firmware that opens the possibility of third party apps. Useful a few years ago, before certain features were unlocked/added on the iphone. Today, most everything you can get off of cydia (app store for third party apps) can be purchased from the apple app store. Unless you're into pirated software, and saving $.99 here and there, the hassle of waiting for a jailbreak to be available for an update is not worth it.

I just spent a month teaching my father how to use his iPhone. His birthday present came back and bit me in you know what. Reminds me how he taught me how to drive or keep fish tanks. Lots of frustration.

My iPhone is jailbroken.

Its cool it doesnt take long to do at all but as for useful I would not call it a must have. It gives me the ability to do small things like I can facetime without being on wi-fi.

Other things i use is you can add shortcuts to your home button for example I can change a song while im running by hitting the home button 3 times which is very useful to me.

You can download themes and make you phone look different and other shortcuts and little stuff that doesnt really change the phone at all just could make a few things a little easier.

Basically a jailbroken phone has another app store called "cydia" and you can download 3rd party apps that alter the code on your phone and lets you change small tweaks that help it run smoother to your preference. If you have any questions you can ask me and this is the website I used to Jailbreak my phone http://www.jailbreakme.com/

Zedge.com is pretty good. Sync with iTunes, and viola. The default tones on the iPhone are fairly decent as far as volume. If they are so quiet that it's hard to hear, then you may have a bad phone.

I like Zedge myself.

Jitterbug is what my grandparents use. Honestly. lol

One thing with the industry Gary is that we have to conform to technology, it will not conform to us...lol.

I hate the keyboard on the iphone. I have similar fingers (more like an Italian sausage or Kielbasa). Furthermore, I also dislike that the phone doesn't flash when ther eis a new message. Third, I don't like that the basic iphone 4 (sans "s") does not have talk to text like my droid did. Other than that.... it's alright.

I have jailbroken every device. I am waiting on the ipad 3 jailbreak and the 5.1 untethered jailbreak. If you do it. Here are the apps you need to get. Don't go crazy. The more foreign code injected causes the biggest chance of issues to form. All of these have been tested and worked correctly.

VOICEMAIL FORWARDER- can send voicemails received by your phone to others by email

INFINIDOCK- Endless apps in the dock
INFINIFOLDER-Endless apps in folders
MYWI5- Allows wireless tether. Frowned upon by carriers
Rainbow Siri Mic- Changes color depending on voice intensity in siri
SIRI Toggles-Allows you to open apps via voice "open calculator"
3G unrestrictor- allows you to facetime over 3G
SBSettings- Just a swipe of the time will allow you to have access to wifi/airplane toggles. Very handy.
SPRINGFLASH- ability to activate flashlight at any time inside any app. Just by hitting the powerbutton twice fast. My favorite app.

There is no untethered 5.1 jailbreak at this time.

This is what my jailbroken phone looks like. My favorite thing is shaking the phone to lock it and tapping the home button three times for general settings where I can change to air-plane mode, change the brightness and turn on or off maybe things. Like said before, its not a must have and if you don't really know what it does to your phone, I wouldn't do it even though its pretty safe.

Here is my tweaked home page.

great advice so far!

great advice so far!

thanks.

New question: I got my first "real" Verizon bill.
I hardly used phone call time. I went way over on texting. Is there a cost effective way to reduce phone time and increase texting allowances?

set up your imessage. people on i-devices can use the apple internal messaging service and you won't be charged txting while on wifi.

Downgrade your minutes plan and upgrade your txting plan.

Ok Gary now I will chime in as the manager said store, I do not have your number for that phone but if you want to pm me your number I can take a look at your account to see what we can do.
