is 9watts per gallon an "overkill" ?

I have a 72g bowfront. Trying to find good lighting to be able to suppot both LPS and SPS corals and maybe a clam.

The fixture I am looking at now has two 250w 13K halides and one 150w 20k halide. That equals 9 watts per gallon.

Is this overkill?

You really wouldn't need the 150 watt MH light. You could take that out. Do you have a plastic brace? If so then an mh light right above it is a bad idea. But 9 watts per gallon really wouldn't total overkill. Its a fairly good amount but more then what is needed.

Yeah, deffinately remove the 150. The 250's will suffice. I have a 46g and keeping LPS, SPS, and an anenome under a 175 and VHO. I also have had a clam under this light for about a year now and all is doing well.
