Is a QT necessary

smilesmile2008

I like fish
I've heard from people that buying a QT is useless and also from some other people that it's very important. Do you think I should use one?

Depends what your goal is! If it is to build a decent sized fish population in your tank and not go broke doing it then, yes, QT is necessary. If it is to spend a small fortune on fish, see your population crash, replace, and crash again, then no, QT is not necessary. You decide which approach makes more sense.

There are folks who have been able to build an impressive population of fish without QT, but these folks are more the minority than the majority; and most of them have experienced a disease crash. I know, I used to be one of them.

ich and other parasites/diseases are so common you're going to have problems sooner or later without a QT

Not quarantining is like playing Russian Roulette. No one wins, some just get to play longer. Come see us in the Fish Diseases forum if you would like to see why quarantining is the better strategy. Or, alternatively, check out your local Craigslist.

Which in turn is where I will buy my new equipment. Circle of [aquarium hobby] life!

Yeah, I got all my ancillary tanks and stuff there. usually 20 cents on the dollar. A little vinegar and water, good as new.

After my 10 year old 180 gallon reef tank with no issues ever caught brooklynella and killed all but one of my fish, I now how a few QT tanks up and running. It was so bad that I tore the tank down and sold it. Then decided to start over bigger and better! One bad fish killed everyone! I am scared to death to add any new fish to my 300 now. Every fish/coral/rock/invert that comes into my house goes into the QT now!

i wouldn't take advice from anyone who tells you that quarantine is not necessary.

but don't take my word for it:

+1 You either "Drop and Prey" or "QT and be sure". The decision is ultimately yours but eventually you will get tired of watching all that $$$ die with your fish
