Is another anemone ok?

Ok so basically right now i have 2 RBTA in my 55 gallon reef tank. They are both quite happy and are both hosted by a mated pair of clowns. one being a pair of Black O Clowns, and the other being Maroon Gold Stripe Clowns. The clowns get along and have no problems. Is it okay for me to add one more anemone, blue carpet, to my tank with another pair of clowns or should i be a good person and wait till i get my 120 gallon up and running?

I wouldnt have 2 or 3 pairs of clowns even in a 120g. Once those Maroons reach maturity they are going to kill any other clowns in the tank with them.

Its not a good idea to mix anemones. They can tollerate multipes of the same species, but not differnt. Chemcal warfare.

I was actually just reading an article about how some anemones are considered solitary and will fight with each other for space. So, there's not only chemical warfare (allelopathy) between different species but also within species.

The reality is that some people do have multiple anemones of different species in one tank. The common recommendation is to run a lot of carbon to combat allelopathy.

Personally, I've always removed an anemone prior to introducing a new one. RBTA -> Magnifica -> Gigantea.

Regarding the clowns, IME maroon clowns can be some of the meanest and most aggressive clowns and will bully any fish in the tank. I had a 125 gallon tank with a single maroon and every time I stuck my hand in the tank, it would quickly come over and bite me.

If you're looking for the "can it be done" answer, then the answer is "yes" it can be done. Not sure if it's a smart choice though.

So i tried to mix species in a tank. I had a lta and a gbta and were doing ok. not sweet but ok for a little bit then thought hey a condy would be cool. Before I knew it everything was wiped out except my pair of clowns that were on deaths door. So i learned my lesson and have a BTA only tank. Check out my thread. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2122439

I think BTA's are really cool anemones to watch. And yes i am going to have a carpet but a species only tank.

This is intresting and a little scarry. I have a LTA and a BTA. The bta has sat next to the lta a few times with no real issue. The only issue was when tenticals touched they would deflate a little on the LTA. Which, actually suprised me since the lta sting is pretty nasty and the bta's is mild (both to me and to my corals/fish). The lta has left some nasty looking burns on my coral beauty(who loves to swim by it)

going of Dnak's yes answer. yes I can be done I'm saying no its not a good idea, like said before the maroons are some of the meanest clowns there are. I've had people tell me that they have had 6 different types of clowns in a small tank before. For a short while it will work. But history shows that it will only work for a short time, just watch the pairs you got and make sure they are staying away from each other. Now for the new pair if it was my tank at home I would not do it. Adding a new anemone would be ok just run the carbon, but then on the other had clowns are territorial. in the while they can "own" up to 10 square yards or more, full of multiple anemones. So its your call and GL let us know what your final decision is/was.
