Is Blue Zoo comparable to Live Aquaria?

LA Disease Prevention:

Other fish such as Angelfish, tangs, certain genus of wrasse, and several other specific species are given therapeutic saltwater baths. These baths contain praziquantel or other medications that eliminate flukes, protozoan, and parasites commonly found on wild fish.

In addition to the baths, all quarantined fish are treated with copper sulfate and a 37% formaldehyde solution to combat Amyloodinium ocellatum and Cryptocaryon irritans.

Pretty interesting about their copper usage.

so what is QM? i hear QM and wholesale a lot...

QM = Quality Marine

Quality Marine = HUGE Wholesaler.

QM drop-ships all of LA's fish from 'their' California facility, as well as for some other retailers IIRC. Their fish are usually always in tip-top shape compared to other wholesalers/importers.

so when someone buys a fish from LA, does it come directly from QM or from LA's facility? or is LA somewhat like Amazon.com where they often times, just arrange the purchase and at no point hold delivery of the product.

for the reocrd, i've puchased from LA many times and have always been very satisfied.

I dont get it...
What's the deal?
They are treating their fish , are'nt all your shops do this?
These are just common medicines nothing really advanced here, all shops should be able, or better say must do this.

I wouldnt say they Quarentine the fish, I rather call it acclimate it.

from whats written there, i understands it as they copper all their fish. i was previously under the impression, that such treatment is only as deemed necessary.

whatever they do, obviously they do a great job at it. i'm just curious, thats all.

I do not agree with the last sentence.

how come LA/QM doesnt have as big of a stock on certain fish as NYA, particularly large angels. i mean, i dont expect them to have everything out there. NYA would have 10+ blueline angels of several sizes, along other different large angels. while LA would every once in awhile get a blueline angel in. NYA, several adult emperors, LA none(and its not often they get one either). NYA several chrysurus angels, LA none.

Check out our video series, in particular the fish parts for some more insights into our quarantine procedures: http://www.liveaquaria.com/general/general.cfm?general_pagesid=377

@geaux xman - We list on every species page what facility the fish or coral comes from. We ship from Quality Marine in LA, and also Reef Cleaners from Florida, and plants from Illinois, and more. Details are here: http://www.liveaquaria.com/general/general.cfm?general_pagesid=28 All Diver's Den are soley from our facility in Rhinelander.

Regarding the anemones, I was dismayed to see the thread on the Haddoni's not making it. Awful to hear about. There are details on our Anemone care here - we do our best: http://www.liveaquaria.com/PIC/article.cfm?aid=274

Again, thanks for all the great comments. Whoever you do buy from, we hope it is a valuable experience and you receive healthy animals that are with you for many years! :-)

We have a local seller here in NJ that actually does do a full QT regimen on any fish he brings in. The prices are a bit higher but not outrageous. He can bring in any reef safe fish and QT it for you. He does the same with corals.

If done properly (no shared water) it is worth extra dollars.

We have had great luck with DD and LA, not as much with BZA. We tend to stick to LA/DD, local or PIA in the future

In a hobby where profit is king and prices are inflated on nearly everything, do you really think all shops are doing this? Hmmmmmm?

As long as there are people that will buy unquarantined, questionably healthy fish, the majority of fish stores will not do what DD does.

In fact, LA doesn't do what DD does.

The medicine might be common, but the time and the space and the money spent is not free.

It doesn't seem too hard of a concept to grasp.

Kudos to DD for doing it and keeping prices relatively in check. (although I will never ever buy a designer clownfish. but that's another topic)

I know for a fact that QM treats their fish system with Cu. In fact, when you're there, they're very specific about not cross-contaminating the water between the two systems.

So LA doesn't really have a "facility" in California? All their fish come from Quality Marine? How long between a fish come in and when they shipped out? They don't hold the fish at all?

I never ordered from bluezoo but I had great experience with liveaquaria! I ordered 3 carberryi anthias and they all came in with a horrible bacterial infection. I called them right away and the extended the warranties on the 2 fish with sores on their sides to a whole month! you don't get customer service like that anywhere else! Needless to say, they did die within 3 days of them arriving, but I was completely refunded and I ordered 3 more. This time they were absolutely perfect! I did QT them for a month and treated with prazipro before sending them to the DT. They are eating NLS pellets now :) BEAUTIFUL fish always come from these guys!

I ordered divers den corals as well and I was happily surprised at the quality and size of the pieces!
