I have cheato growing like mad in my new fuge.....can i feed my tangs (kole and yellow) cheato exclusively for a week or two to keep the cheato in check?
sure, but i wouldnt feed it exculsivly. for all you know they may not even eat it if its becoming tomuch, feed it to them, give some to other reefers, or throw it away!
I have a sailfin, and he will gleefully eat any chaeto that escapes from the fuge. However he doesn't digest it very well - it looks the same coming out as it did going in! I have noticed that sometimes he (and my coral beauty) have trouble pooping it out, so I try to not introduce any chaeto to the display.
definately a variety is best. it is a marine based food so that gives it a plus but should not be their only diet. Try growing some other varieties in your fuge to round things out a bit.
I'd definately step that up a little bit. Tangs in the wild constantly pick algae off rocks...etc. Once they have stripped your tank they need something to pick at throughout the day. I would suggest feeding some type of seaweed at least 3-4 times a week. And variety is definately key to good nutrition.
Mine used to eat it. I did notice that my Naso would poop it out almost the same way it went in, only whiter so it made sense to remove it from their diet. Once my Naso went off feed for a couple of days and finally pushed out a ball of cheato that seemed to be blocking him. It just made sense to take it away from them.
Also, a gentleman here posted about a couple of fish sudden deaths. The necropsy showed that the guts were completely bound with cheato. Another reason not to risk it.
My blue tang goes nuts whenever I put Nori in my tank (3-4 times a week). From all I read, Nori is very very good for tangs. I don't know about cheato. Sorry.
