is it cycled?

So i have a new aquapod12 . Set it up and let run for a week, ph 8.2, 79 degrees, then i added 16 pounds of live rock from Fosters and Smith, and added live sand.... i have not read any ammonia yet. I thought that the "stuff" that came on the live rock was supposed to die and start the whole nitrate cycle? Is it that it is allready cured, and it is ready for my one clown fish? Should i add some ammonia and see if it is broken down before i add fish and coral? Bunker

well if the rock was already cycled (which it probably was not FULLY cured after shipping) then you wont get spikes...but like i said, with shipping it probably would have made SOME die off.

How long have you had the rock in there? I'd add a small cleanup crew first and see how that goes. Then in a week or 2 i'd add one small fish.

What you could do is add a bit of fish food and see what that does tho. That would be better than adding amonia (well straight up amonia i mean...the food will cause amonia if its not cycled yet, but thats what the test is :) )

just be patient. mines was the same thing. still no sign of ammonia but the first week or so the nitrate was 5ppm. now it is 0. its about a month now into cycling and all i added was 3 snails for some algae grazing.

i ahve had the rock in the tank for about two weeks now. Starting to get some green and brown algae... no ammonia... will try a drop of ammonia and test in one day... if it is gone, then i would assume i am ready for a fish. What cleanup crew should i get, and what is included in a cleanup crew? What do they eat? Thanks. Bunker

There is a chance that you had an ammonia spike and missed it. You are getting a diatom bloom which is part of the cycle. Add some snails and blue legged hermits and let them do their job before adding a fish. Keep testing your water. Personally, I would never add ammonia to the tank. Patience, Patience, Patience.

I am cycling my BioCube 29 right now and am at the diatom stage, Astrea and blue legged hermits are mowing this down. I added one of each to be sure it is safe and the blue legged ate a trail up one side, across the front and down the other in a few hours.

What if the local fish store does not have Astrea of blue legged hermits? What else could i get instead? I have been focusing so much on what corals i want to do that i did not research a cleanup crew? I still have not read any ammonia. I have not tested Nitrates yet... wondering if the rock i got was too cured. Does Biospyra work for saltwater tanks? Bunker
