Is it normal for my RODI water to smell

I purchased an RODI unit off of amazon and have always got 0 TDS but the water smells like surfer/rotten eggs. Is this normal? Could it be my city water? The water coming from the sink does not.

It should not smell like rotten eggs.That smell indicates the production of hydrogen sulfide.Maybe there is something wrong with the reverse osmosis membrane.Try aerating the water to see if that doesn't solve the problem.

Do you happen to be smelling it in a brute trash can? Those things smell after holding water for a while.

RO/DI will smell odd if the carbon is exhausted. Chlorine and chloramine compounds generally don't read on a TDS meter since they're soluble. These compounds will also damage your membrane. You'll need a local water report to find out what is used.

I noticed the same thing as sde1500. I store my water in the Brute cans and there is a "smell' Not really sure how to describe it, but it's not rotten eggs. When I drain some water off to a five gallon bucket it smells fine.

+1 on Brutes smelling, but not the water itself. I think the brute cans just have that smell, and with a closed lid, the smell collects, so it smells bad when you open it. If you kept the lid off, I doubt there would be a smell, but that would let dust and other contaminants get into the water. Whatever the case, seems everyone using brutes gets the smell, but I've not yet heard of an issue caused by it.

My 55 gallon food grade barrel smells fine, but the Brute gets a 'musty' odor if the lid is left on for a few hours with no aeration.
An hour of movement and fresh air contact takes care of it. As does a little bleach and a good rinse with the garden hose.

I've never had my RO/DI water give off any odor.
Replace the carbon and check your membrane.

When DI resins are first installed and when they are near exhaustion, they release amines that smell exactly like what you are dealing with. Due to my idiot plumbing skills, I installed my RO membrane backwards and blew out my DI cartridges. It took a few days to get the smell out of the house.

so why do the Bruttes do this?

My personal opinion is that there must be some organics leftover from saltwater mixing. If you have calcification on any container, you probably have organic residue as well.
I still use the water, but I make sure it is well aerated before I do

If you are using color changing deionization resin the rodi water can smell fishy due to the small amount of die that is used. I agree a musty odor is not ideal and needs to be investigated...
