Is it realistic to have a reef tank with no retailers?

I am thinking of moving to the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina in a year or so. Is it realistic to think I can keep a reef tank where there are no stores what so ever? I would have to order everything mail order including corals and livestock.

We really are spoiled here in S. Fla with all the LFS and this club.

Difficult and expensive....but not impossible.

Yes, we are spoiled! Florida and California are the 2 best states to have a reef tank. IMO

yes , it can be done. You have places like LiveAquaria, and DoctorFosterSmith, MarineDepot, ... ect

On a side note....we're losing alot of people to the Carolina's..i know of 2 long term friends that have left in the last 4 months to the Carolina's ....

i kno they have a reef club in north carolina not sure how close to the smoky mountains though.... i think it would be way harder to start a new reef tank but seeing as how u already have the essentials u should be fine relying on the mail

Hey there. I am from N.Y. And in my area we really only have a couple of stores. Most everything for my setup I get online with no problems (including livestock). I don't think you should have much problems at all. HTH

Where in N.C.? I lived in E. Tenn. for nine years, and had access to great reef stores in Knoxville, Chattanooga, and even the Tri-cities. Places like Petco and Petsmart have basic fishkeeping supplies and salt for emergencies. Livestock will probably entail a drive, or hooking up with local clubs and swaps. We have a very active club in Nashville, as does Knoxville, the the Chattanooga area hosts a big frag swap this weekend. That being said, part of the charm of living out in the sticks is, well, living out in the sticks. I admit to being a Florida native who escaped from hell in '91 and only goes back now to visit....
