Is it really alive? the LFS question

I wonder how many of us are amazed at what our LFS's call live rock? And, if that weren't enough, my wife keeps asking "they want how much/pound?", at which time, I think to myself, "why do they want that much?".

Am i the only one feeling this or do others sometimes feel like we're getting a bad deal with our LFS's?

My local LFS sells live rock at $8.99 a pound and it looks like rock with a bit of purple on it, not even close to what the stuff from TBS costs. If you figure I am going to be spending about $600.00 at the end of this month for a 40 gallon package plus shipping which comes with 80pounds of rock, 40 pounds of sand and a ton of other creatures. The same amount of JUST rock at my LFS would cost 719.20 and include NO sand, NO creatures, and nearly NO life!!

As i said, i'm amazed at what happens at our LFS. It's sad, i mean, it wouldn't cost them that much to set the rock in a "seeded" tank, and turn on the actinics.

I should would love to have the resources to start a fish store!!! Man i wish...

I have this totally different way of thinking about how i would "push" the items i would sell.

Yep. I still don't understand. Personally I am surprized that the LFS locations haven't snuck in some TBS. With the difference they could easily charge $20 or $30 a pound by cost justifying what you are getting (that sponge is $8, those porcelain crabs are $5 each, that...)
