i know this question may sound stupid but i dont want $200 in bulbs going down the drain...can i wipe down my metal halide bulbs with a moist paper towel because of salt on the bulb?

Thats what I do. Make sure the bulbs are perfectly dry. I've also heard not to touch the bulbs with your hands, only use a soft towel.

If you are getting that much salt spray on your MH, I would put in an acrylic shield. If your outer bulb cracks from the spray (it can), you will get UV damage to your tank and possibly you.
