is sand good for the bottom of a sh tank?

any type of sand should be fine with a couple sand sifter star and some blue or red leg hermits. but if you want to use crusted coral you can just use a gravel vac to clean the bottom. in my seahorse tank i have a course sand with some blue leg hermits and i need to get a sand sifter star. its just i keep forgetting but i will put one in soon.

I have six seahorse tanks so far, on the way to eight, and all are/will be barebottom as I personally find it sooo much easier to keep the system clean, making it the dreaded bacterial levels stay in check easier and therefore increasing the chances of success in the long term.

Bare bottom is easier and likely better for a seahorse only tank.
With that said - I don't take my own advice. I put 2 inches of sand in the front and on the sides that are visible as I added an exquisite wrasse to control some pests and I think it is a very cool fish. I remove my sand bed once per year for a good cleaning in addition to the traditional method of using a gravel siphon, choked off slightly, to clean the sand bed once per month.
