Is there such a thing?

As putting to much LR in your refugium? I just recently added more rock that came with a tank I purchased into my existing system to fill up the fuge with LR. Is there such a thing as to much or will it add filtration to my system once it becomes live again?

Thanks!

If you are unable to clean the accumulated detritus then I believe it is too much. The rock itself won't harm anything but utilizing the space for macroalgae may be more beneficial depending on your needs.

Ive also got a couple big balls of chaeto in there as well. The reason Im curious is because my nitrates are high.

Reduced flow = detritus build up. That will lead to high nutrients.

Personally, the less rock the better for me. An open sump is the only way to go. I haven't run a fuge in almost 7 years now. A good skimmer is much more beneficial.

I also have an open sump and mine also has a small power head. I want to make sure that everything stays In suspension and is picked up by my skimmer. I opted out on the refugium as it didn't work for me.
