Is thi a good idea or a waste of time?

I have a 14g biocube running since feb. I also have a 10g tank that's just empty and not being used. I was thinking about turning it into a sump/fuge. Any ideas? Good or bad?

Are you just trying to increase your water volume?

I ran a BC 14 for awhile and found that most of the equipment can be hidden in the back compartments. Have you made any modifications or is the tank stock?

IMO, sumping an AIO seems unnecessary.

I think the key here is understanding WHY you want the sump. If you want to do it as a fun project and because you want to see the cool life that develops in a 'fuge, go for it. If you think it'll add a specific benefit to the tank, we probably need to know more about the existing setup (livestock, equipment, maintenance routines, parameter levels, etc) and about what specific problem you think you'll be solving.

I can't see any downside to adding volume to your system. You could add a protein skimmer to the mix that way. Chaeto would help you control nitrates. It would increase flow. Add some rock or rock rubble and it would increase the biological filtration. Der Wille is right (as usual), but I can't see any reason not to try this.

I have a few mods. InTank media basket, led lighting, rimless. Livestock , misc palys and zoas. Had 1 rbta that split into 2, ricorda torch Duncan gsp blue finger leather 2 black ocerilis pistol and watchman and a spotted pj cardinal plus my cuc. I'd like to add more water volume, and id like to move my heater and ato out. I feed every other day, minimal ammount and I still get nitrate readings. I'd like to be able to lower them with some chaeto in my sump.

I always kept my heater in the rear compartments. I suppose a nano skimmer in the back would detract from the nice, clean rimless look but it's an option as well.

Also you might be pushing the limits in regards to your bioload. What does your water change regimen consist of? Frequency and amount?

hopefully this works...

I don't see any downside if the refugium/sump is kept clean.
