Is this a good Tripod setup?

Looking at taking Beerguy's advice to go with gitzo legs and a RRS head.

Are those legs good enough? I would like to get into backpacking, tagging along something lightweight and stable so I figured the carbon fiber would be a good idea.

I'm looking at really right stuff's website and it seems, by their "which ballhead is right for you" section, I would like a mid-sized.

There are a lot of them and I don't have a clue which one I should go with:

I'd like it to have a quick release.

Which one would be best suited for me?

Thanks!

Those are definitely light legs but should be fine. That's the BH that I use and wouldn't trade for the world. If you're going to go that route, spend the extra $150 (if you can) and get the L-Bracket for your camera.

Light legs... hey, I'm using an aluminum sunpak right now.

For the record everybody, my 24-70 f/2.8L and 5D2 smacked a leg of the tripod today when I was out shooting. The head just dropped. Nothing happened and that event just pushed me overboard to buy a setup that will not do that.

I just want something pretty easy to carry around with me. Easy to set up. The sunpak is annoying. I have to hold the camera and head of the tripod while trying to unclip the legs and extend them.

There were multiple heads on that page, beerguy. Is this the one you are talking about?

And then this is an L bracket?

Thanks again.

LOL! I searched gitzo on youtube and came upon this as one of the first videos:

It was so ridiculous/funny I actually watched the whole video.

Take a look. :spin3:

Before I go ahead and make a purchase, I want the $375 BH-40 RRS head because it comes with the quick release? The one for $295 or whatever is nothing, just the ballhead, correct?

What's the main difference between the tripod I linked in the first post and the 1541? For $220 more it holds more wight and I don't plan on having a setup that will weigh that much anyhow. I'd rather invest that extra savings into the L plate. Otherwise if there is something else great about it that the $375 traveller doesn't have that I'm overlooking let me know. This is something I could probably keep forever, according to many sources. Rather I get the right stuff the first time.
I'm not sure I want gitzo after that video. LOL. I'm sure that was one incident. :)

Yes. You want the LR or LRII version and you want an L-bracket.

If you have the money, the 1541 will be more stable but either should be fine for all but really big guns.
