If you wanna start with clean rock get dry base rock, its as clean as you can get, no life at all. It will coraline up in 2-3 months and will be seeded with life within weeks of being introduced to the tank...
Define base rock?
LR from say Walt Smith that has just been left out to dry?
Rock like limestone from a quarry?

Both would be loaded with phosphorous.

I have also read of aggressive algaes taking over on cooked rock in lack of competition from more benign species. That would be a concern. Any one have any experience of that.

If you ever see any of the algae types shown in this picture, find yourself an appropriate herbivore as fast as possible. They are very tolerant of low-nutrient environments, and they will take over.

As for coralline algae... I don't have a lot in my 120 or 180, but I suspect that has to do more with my lighting than anything else. Both my 120 and 180 use exclusively 10,000K Ushio metal halide light.

Coralline grows extremely fast in my 155 (too fast, as far as Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m concerned). My 155 only has power compacts for lighting.

I see people have not been taking our subtle and not-so-subtle warnings to heart.
