is this maxima OK?

I have had him about a month now.

Mantle seems retracted slightly and is not extending vigorously like my other croceas. I see some sliming or bubbling from the mantle frequently.

I dont see any snails on him, but did notice a few extremely small starfish. Very small ones. Not the brittle stars though.

I suspect microbubbles from the return and the sump are irrititating his mantle? could that be an issue?

Thanks for ideas. Or maybe thats just the way he is and theres nothing wrong??

looks like pm to me but i could be wrong. Give it a freshwater dip for like 10 min. Don't place this clam near your other clams if you have any. PM spreads through proximity. I battled PM and lost like 7 clams.

you are correct, but give the dip for at least 20 min.

OK thank you. This is actually the first time I have heard of PM. I will try the dip and let you know. My other clams are off on the other side of the tank I will watch them closely now for PM as well.

Wait. I'm a newbie looking to learn about clams as I'd like at least one in an upcoming tank. I had no idea that fresh water dips were acceptable for a clam. So, not trying to hijak the thread, but what is a good recommended time for a FWD for a Crocea and what exactly are we accomplishing with this dip?

Thanks and sorry for going OT... sort of.

a FWD is used to treat a clam which has PM ( Pinched Mantle ) which is a protozoan infestation. you would use RO/DI water treated to match the tanks Ph and temp and should last for 20 to 30 min, 5 min is not long enough.

i remember a thread where the guy dipped all his clams for 20 min except for his new maxima which he dipped for 5 min only. later that night the maxima started showing signs of PM again which quickly spread to the rest of clams again.

during the fwds make sure you blast it with a turkey baster to get under the protective mucus. (thx chris for the tip)

I have a Squamosa that is not extending its mantle recently. I have examined him for pests and parasites, but have not seen any. There are long stringly things in and around him.

Forgive my ignorance, but are there any other tell tail signs of PM other than the obvious fact that the clam is not extending its mantle.

Other info, the clams reflex is still very good and my Crocea looks as nice as he always does.

Thanks

I am kinda new to clams myself and have 3 now... all look good but I did have some in the past and think I lost them to PM.. are there some types of clams that get PM easer or just any clam?

Any clam can get them. But when pm first started showing up there were more maximas that were getting affected then others. Maybe the protozoans started with the maximas first then spread to other types.

I thought we dont know that it is a protozoan? Where have you got this info?

its definitely leaning towards the protozoan. even if we're 100% sure its a protozoan, there's a krapload of them out there.
what we do know is croceas seem to be more susceptible to the disease.
