Is this normal for an AquaC

Thanks guys for all the replies. Since I plan on giving it a few more weeks to impress me I'll do as vinstr said and leave it completely alone for the next two weeks. If by the end of Jan. I'm not rolling in skimate I'll be joining the ER club. I know these AquaC's come highly recommended but two months will be about the limits of my patience.

Thanks,
Dave

Well everyone I'm also in the Same boat...

I have a Aqua EV 150,and I don't have the Fancy Air Regulator etc...I have the OG model when they first started Shipping....I have 70 gallon tank..It does the same thing,Wet Foam,Skimmate green-yellow and looks like Tea...The Neck does Coat up with green Sludge....

Euro-Reef Will be my next skimmer...

I've decided to remove all the media in the sump for the next two weeks to see if there is any effect on the skimmer. The water in my sump usually has to pass directly through the following;

- two layers of filter floss in drawer #1
- one layer of HBH Aqua-Pure carbon filter pad in drawer #2
- one layer of HBH Aqua-Pure Phosphate absorbing filter pad also in drawer #2
- one baffle with carbon filled bag
- one baffle with SeaChem Phoseguard filled bag

The water has been through alot before getting to the EV-120. We'll see if this changes anything.

Aqua C - EV120

Aqua C - EV120

I have two Aqua - C Ev120's in action. I have one that is in my sump on a 75 gallon tank. It sits flat on the bottom of the sump and it doesn't really matter if the water is above the gate valve or not. It skims great. So based on that, when I set up my 90 gallon tank, I bought another Ev-120. On this sump I set the skimmer up on a 4-5 in ch shelf inside of the sump. I had the same problems with it that you are having. I thought maybe the slightly longer hose that connects the pump to the skimmer my be decreasing the head pressure. So I bought the recommended Dolphin pump because it pushed a little more gph an hour. This did not really help either. At the same time I ordered the Dolphin pump I also bought a larger Mag pump ( mag 7 ). This seemed to do ok for a few days and I thought I had figured it out, but I constantly had to fool with the gate valve. I finally got tired of it and put the mag 5 back on ( just last week ). I am getting a steady level in my reaction chamber now, but the skimmate is like a real watery light green. It does most of its skimming at night, and I don't know why that is, but it does. Its funny how to identical skimmers in very similar sumps work so differently. Not really funny but frustrating. The one on my 75 pulls out some dark junk. But the one on my 90 watery green stuff. AT least its pulling something out right now. These are the second skimmers I have ever used. The first was the Berlin Classic. If any one figures this puzzle out please post. I too have sent e-mails in the past to Jason, he reponded super fast to all of my e-mails. Customer service is definately not an issue. ( for me anyway )

Have you tried to open the air valve (blue) all the way, which it is supposed to be, and raising the water level of your sump. So that the water is above the drain of the gate valve? That may help you out alot, maybe not.

No way should the water in the sump be above the drain of the gate valve. If it can't drain or gets resistance to draining, it may overflow. I have my 120 outside my sump with a Mag5 open all the way, air valve open all the way. My skimmate is not thick, but then I don't have a high bioload.

Unless you alternate two different skimmers on the same tank and do a compassion over time, I don't think that the consistency of the skimmate is the best way to judge performance. Your water quality should be the yardstick.

Man thats nuts.I bought a Euro-reef ES5-2,it started pulling dark crud in 20 miniutes after setting it in the sump.Plug it in pull the riser up about a inch and thats it.Sorry for you troubles though

Water level

Water level

All I know is the water consistantly stays above the gate valve drain in my 75 gallon tank and does a lot better job than the one that does not. This suggestion came to me from another Reef Central member some time back. Maybe its just a coincidence, I don't know. What I do know is that my skimmer does not overflow with the sump water level above the gate valve drain. Just my personal experience.

Thanks for all the help guys. I read alot before buying the EV-120 to replace the other skimmer I had. Unfortunately I didn't really find much negative feedback on them. Now that I have one and I'm having problems I find that some people are having the same basic problems. I know they are widely considered one of the best makes of skimmer available, but to me anyway it looks like there may be a consistency issue with regards to performance. I know performance will always vary because of the number of variables but it looks like when some of the AquaC skimmers don't produce the answer as to why can be hard to find, even for the manufacturer, which is scary. Just my opinion.

I don't want to turn my thread into a bash AquaC thread, I just want the thing to work. I'll try emailing AquaC again next week in hopes of getting an answer.

Update...........the last couple of days I've noticed that I am getting a little bit of a brown scum line about half way up the clear lift tube. I know this would be normal but the scum line is only on one side of the lift tube, the side furthest from the injector. There seems to be more turbulence in the bottom of the clear lift tube on the injector side.

I'm not sure if it has anything to do with my AquaC not working but has anyone found any relation to the skimmer having to be perfectly level with amount of skimate produced? Also I wonder why I'm getting that scum line on only one side of the clear list tube?? By the way.......still no rising foam :(

Your getting there

Sounds good...your getting there. Again- don't touch anything! Leave it alone - brown scum on one side is good - it has to start somewhere. Just leave it be and check on it every day or so. I am sure that soon it will start to relly kick in. Just be patient and do not fiddle with it- if you do, you will be starting all over again
Good luck!

As promissed, here is the response I got from Jason at AquaC.

Questions:

..."The main problems are:

1. Every time food is introduced, foaming stops for approximately 6-7 hours.
2. Every time we cook in the house, foaming stops for approximately 2-3 hours (tank is about 20ft. from the stove).
3. If there is a crowd (that is more than 5 people) in the room, foaming stops and will not resume but after some hours after the room is alone.
4. Even when there is foam, it is extremely difficult to tune. Sometimes it just doesnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t make it to the top and into the cup, as foam, and then at times it just overflows with water, not yellowish skimmate, just clear water. If I move anything in the output gate valve, or in the intake ball valve, the results change dramatically. I.e. from no foam to overflown with water."...

his answer:

..."In answer to your questions:

1. It is normal for the skimmer to stop foaming for a period of time after feeding the system - this is due to the oils and chemicals that are released into the water by the food and your hands. These oils affect the surface tension of the water, which prevents foam from forming. You are experiencing a much longer period than normal, however, and this could be due to the foods or additives you are using. Any chance you are using Selcon, Zoe, or a similar vitamin additive that might be very oily? Certain fish foods such as silversides, sardines and other oily substances can also have this effect.

2. It sounds like your skimmer is drawing in some oils from the kitchen - oils and chemicals often become aerosols and drift around your home during cooking, and if the skimmer is near the kitchen, it could be sucking in a lot of these compounds and this is also shutting the foam down. I've only noticed this effect when skimmers are located very close to the kitchen, and the only remedy I can think of would be to place some sort of intake filter over the air valve on your skimmer. Is it possible to run an air line from the skimmer's valve to an outside window for a fresh air source?

3. This is a strange one, and I would suspect that it has to do with the level of CO2 and other hases inside the room when you have a bunch of people in there. I haven't noticed this effect in my systems, but if you've seen it happen on several occasions, I wouldn't doubt that it could happen. The above solution would probably solve that problem.

It sounds to me that there are a bunch of different factors here that are constantly at play, and this is part of the reason why your skimmer has been difficult to tune. Narrowing down some of the problems and finding some solutions will no doubt get things under control...

A couple of other things to check: do you have the auto waste collector top packed with activated carbon? If so, you might try removing some of this or switching to a brand that has a larger granule size. If the air flow through the collector is impeded, it can have a negative effect on the skimmer's foaming and this would be making things harder to control.

Also, your skimmer set-up looks good except that there are two areas of concern: It appears as if the Sen is drawing water by siphoning water off the top of the tank, and I can't help but wonder if that flow into the pump is constant or whether it fluctuates? Do you ever notice that bubbles/air gets sucked into the pump? If the tank water level rises or falls at all, this would be placing varying amounts of pressure on the pump, which would thus influence the flow rate from the pump. Also, if the tank level fluctuates, the output from the skimmer might also be fluctuating since you have the return submerged without a siphon break. The combination of these two factors, along with the above, would certainly explain why the skimmer is so difficult to tune and why foaming is hard to control.

Thanks for passing that on Omar. A few interesting points but nothing from AquaC that wasn't probably already suspected. I'd be interested to know how money people out there with EV series skimmers soak their food in Selcon and how it effects the skimmer, ie; How long does it shut down for?

Mine is still not doing much of anything so I stopped soaking the food in Selcon or Seachem Reef Plus two days ago. The Reef Plus seems especially greasy as it leaves a greasy slime on the inside of my little food soaking cup. If it coated the inside of the skimmer it might take a while to clean itself. I hope things turn around soon or I'll be owning a ER. I'm cheering for my 120 because buying a EV-120 and an ES8-2 all within 6 weeks or so will be expensive.

I think I will email AquaC again today. My last two emails went unanswered.

WHAT IS YOUR SALINITY?

It's 1.024, like I said earlier I'm not new to this hobby or protein skimmers. I just can't seem to get this AquaC skimming. I guess more time will tell:)

Just out of curiosity, do you smoke in your own home, and when you have guests over, do they smoke also?

No we don't smoke, and since we have a 6 months old baby, I would get a cute little blue ring octopus for them to pet before I let them smoke in the house.

One thing I guess we are leaving out of the picture is the pump, I'm using a SEN 700, to which I had to install a ball valve (again very difficult to adjust, but I have not been able to find a gate valve). I've noticed that among remora users, that is a big discussion, some are even using MAG 5's. That could be another big factor.

I use a seaclone and I add Seachem Reef Plus 1-2 times a week and when I do my skimmer goes nut must empty cup 2 times a day. Why would Reef Plus have the oppsite effect on your skimmer?

I don't know, just that oily greasy substances usually shut a skimmer down for awhile.
