Is this normal?

I just purchased a malu anenome today from my lfs. After acclimating the anenome, I removed him from the container and placed him on the bottom of my tank. He quickly move to a corner and starting scaling the side of the tank (see pic). My 2 Maroon Clown took to the anenome right away.

My question is; Is it ok for the anenome to stay in this position? I was told to just let the anenome do its own thing, but I have never seen one stay like this.

Please chime in with your suggestions/comments.

yeah dont move the anemone physically. you can persuade it later on but right now let it settle in.

is it a heteractis malu? looks different to me.

knowing what type of nem you have will help you to know what normal behaviors are for it.

malu-lives in the sand
BTA-lives up in the rocks

Yeah, that is Entacmea quadricolor and it needs to be place on the live rock. It will plant its foot in a cave or crevice. They seem to prefer overhangs where the column is attached under the overhang and the anemone extends out. The column makes sort of a "J" shape.

And as mentioned before, definitely make sure the anemone cannot get sucked into the powerhead, that could wipe out the whole tank, not to mention kill the anemone.

You said your maroons went right for the anemone, that's not surprising considering that E. quadricolor (BTA) is the only natural host for maroons.

I have only had it 1 day. Do you think it will wonder down to the live rock? (that is where I placed it initially), or should I try to move it?

I will turn off the powerhead as soon as I get home.

Eventually it might wander back down. I noticed you have MH lighting, sometimes it takes an anemone a while to acclimate to stronger lighting if it came from a lower light situation. You can minimize the photoshock by keeping the light farther away from the anemone and also limiting the photoperiod.

:( like a few hours ago....

Fingers crossed :(

had my wife unplug the powerhead, the anemone was safe.

Still hanging out in the uppper corner of my tank. Clowns don't seem to mind. They seem to be pretty rough going in and out of the anemone. Is that ok?

In the past, when I have had a BTA move itself up the glass into a perilous position, I have very carefully used a new razor blade to gently remove it from the glass. I've done this a number of times w/o incident.

If it were me I'd move it. That's my 2 cents. Take it for what it's worth (probably less than 2 cents).

A credit card works very well also when removing from the glass. I too would probably gently, slowly remove it from the glass and place it on some live rock. They do like to have their foot in a indentation in the rock, especially an overhang. The foot attached and then the column and tentacles coming out and up, like a "J" shape.

UPDATE

UPDATE

The powerhead is turned OFF. The anemone is still pretty much in the same position.

My question is; will the anemone be ok in this position? I am not sure how comfortable I am moving this beast. I am planning on moving my powerhead, since it is the only one I have in the tank and I need some more flow for my other corals.

Just don't want to irratate the anemone is it is happy where it is.

What are your thoughts?
