Is this the SPS forum?

I can't tell anymore. We have build threads starting with stand construction, beginning chemistry questions, equipment questions, we have people posting pics of their LPS, anemones and whatever looks pretty in their tanks.

It's frustrating coming here to read up on my favorite part of the hobby and having to skip every other thread to get to something close to what this forum should be about.

I think this forum has been hijacked! What do you think?

Nope it's the complaint forum ;)

Heh, I think it's fine the builds are all around SPS centric tanks. Equipment questions specific to SPS needs are fine. If I went to the NPS forum I would expect to see talk of constant feeding systems, and constant water change systems. If I come to the SPS forum I expect to see some talk of Carbon Dosing, Intense Lighting, and High flow pumps.

As far as non-sps in the build threads.. eh if somebody is going to take the time to post photos from there tank so what if a couple of them aren't SPS. Or are you saying we should have a separate build thread for each aspect of our tank in all the different forums?

As long as it's mostly an SPS tank. Most people have mixed reefs. Remember SPS is a pivotal species so if you want to keep any SPS you need to build your tank around SPS is it so bad to see other things that people are able to keep in an SPS centric tanks.

eh all in all it's not worth the bother for me to get upset about the little stuff.

Oh, you want complaints? That's two forums down the hall. This is arguments. ;)

In my opinion, sps keeping involves a number of skills, and I don't mind people asking about lighting or water quality or flow for sps here. I hear your point about those with anemone pics and other obviously not sps oriented questions being better served posting elsewhere. Perhaps we could gently encourage them to do so, by educating them with a "you may get more answers in the (whatever) forum"?

None of it really bothers me much. JM2C

+1 - I look at the threads as learning, and if sometimes they may be in the wrong forum, so be it... Lots of great details in many of the non-specific SPS threads that show up in this forum. It's all good, as some of the best things I've learned about all aspects of the hobby have been found right here. :)

I think build threads can be posted here. Even if the stand and equipment details don't totally pertain to the focus of this forum it’s nice to see/know what others run in their SPS tanks.

Let me clarify a bit. I think build threads are fine when the final product is the finished SPS tank. Not, hey I'm starting a reef tank, check it out. I love equipment questions when they have something to do with keeping a SPS tank. Not, hey is this a good skimmer? I love lighting threads that show different methods and the results. Not, hey I'm thinking about starting a SPS tank, is this a good light? I love chemistry questions and learning about all the different methods people use. Not, hey my Alk is high, how do I lower it?

It seems like people for some reason aren't getting the response they need in other forums so decide to post up in the SPS forum because of how many people are always lurking here.

I'm obviously in the minority so I'll shut it and go about my business!! :p

At least, all of the topics you're complaining about, have something to do with SPS, even if it's requesting information on how to keep SPS healthy.

This thread, on the other hand, has less to do with SPS, than any other thread I've seen, in the SPS forum.

Just sayin'

Amazing I said exactly the same thing the last time this came up lol.

doesnt bother me at all either

Besides, for anyone who is building or designing anything that is primarily for a sps tank, this is the forum for it. There are enough parroted and/or inexperienced answers provided here as it is.

Put the same question out in DIY, equipment, or general and that number of less than helpful, sometimes even detrimental posts for your end goal increases greatly.

I could see maybe being a little more strict about it if this forum had several pages of new threads daily. But it doesnt. It seems to be a page per day roughly, which works out pretty well really

Lame... I am one of those beginner sps keeper (less than 1 year) and I have brought non sps specific questions here because I thought it was the best forum based on my interests, and figured everyone, or most here, had great insight and could offer the best experienced advice... instead, someone with your attitude chimed in, and completely disrespect.my thread and got no help after that... it was about a calcium reactor setup, pertaining to an sps tank... its attitudes like yours that make this part of.the hobby "elitist", and that is garbage...

Feel free to report threads that are "off topic" and they will be removed if their primary focus is not related to SPS husbandry directly. Chemistry and equipment topics are routinely moved to their respective forums, as are all ID threads when we catch them. Threads pertaining to vendors and where to buy XYZ coral are also moved to the vendor forum if the poster meets the minimum requirements, if not, the thread is closed. We really rely on the folks in this forum to make it what they want it to be and this allows for some leniency in topics if they are related to SPS husbandry.
