Is this Zoa Pox? Picture attached!

I've been having problems with my new zoas wasting away and dying and after reading the thread here about white spots/lesions on zoas http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=691978

and the referenced article by Thanh Nguyen & Reef Junkie I inspected my colonies and found at least one polyp that may have it. Can someone confirm that this is at least one of my problems?

Yes, it looks a lot like zoa pox. I would say that I am 100% certain, but pictures can only tell you so much versus being there in person.

Yup looks like it... just had it happen to several colonies... FURAN2 helps out especially if its a very recent infestation... but if its been there for a while without being noticed.. can't guarante that they will make it through the medication... I lost 1/2 through the med process... figured they were already pretty weak from the pox and was just stressed out more during the med process.

Can you share the specific steps you took and how you administered the treatment? I just got back from a LFS with a package of Furan-2 and am getting ready to try to treat mine.

After reading the article by Thanh Nguyen & Reef Junkie I plan on following the procedure laid out as close as I can with the exception of using tank water instead of RO water. I think I read in the long thread that that would be ok. That way I won't have to worry about differing parameters.

Today: one packet in a cup of tank water, treat for 20 mins, then rince and put back into QT tank.
Tomorrow: same
Next day: same

Wait 5 days and re-treat if needed.

Should I treat all the frags or just the ones I can see that have it already?

I checked all of mine this morning and don't see any change positive or negative, but wasn't really expecting any after just the first dip. I'll dip them again today. Any opinions on whether to only dip colonies that I see it on or should I dip all of them just in case?

I pulled out severl plus colonies that came down with ZoaPox.. and put them in a 20 gal QT... I dipped them 3 times in a week then let them rest. 1/2 made it.. the other ones not so good... I still see very tiny pox on one of the colonies and will probly dip it again... Most zoos that have had the pox for a while probly won't make it if they are already stressed and weak.

Thanks, I checked this morning and still don't see a difference after dipping twice. I'll dip them again today and the let them rest. How soon did you notice any difference? If any of them still have it will it spread to others?

Thanks, I got that article out of the thread at the top of this forum. It was written by two of the guys here that were part of a much larger group that spent quite some time and effort trying different cures. Luckilly, they came up with one that produced repeatable results which I'm hoping to replicate.

I did the third treatment today and I don't see any getting any worse but don't see any signs of improvement either. I'm not sure when to expect results but will let them rest for about a week before I treat them again.

Wow, sorry I missed out on this one Bud's Reef, I concur with the treatment above, it is highly successful if you jump on it right away as with any treatment. Even if you don't see any signs of improvement, the treatment is still working. Let us all know on tomorrow if you see any changes.

Keep your head up my friend, you can beat this. I have never used the Furan for this, but I have heard from many friends that it indeed works.

No problem, thanks for the encouragement. I think there is improvement today for most of them. Unfortunately, I've been focusing on the worst one which is in the picture above and it is not improving, but it may have been too late by the time I started treating them for that polyp. I don't see nearly as many single spots on many of the polyps in each colony in general so hopefully I've turned the corner. In a few days I will do another three day treatment. Should I retreat all colonys even if they don't have any spots that I can see or just the ones that still have the spots?

I definitely see improvement today. The polyp in the picture at the beginning of this thread which was the worst affected is actually showing signs of opening today.

Good to hear. I have yet to lose any colonies/frags to zoa pox since using Furan-2. IMO it is highly successful for this type of problem.

You can probably get it locally at an lfs, I got mine from one of the Petland stores. If not locally, Drs Foster&Smith have it on line.

Thanks for the encouragement! Today the worst polyp is almost completely open I thought it was a goner for sure. Out of four colonies only two polyps aren't opening and I see only one white spot on one of them. Do you think I should treat all of the colonies again, just the one that still has a white spot on it, or should I just let it go for now? I also have two colonies that I never saw any spots on and did not treat them. Should I treat them as a preventative measure?
