*** is up with my yellow tang,swimming like a crack head

so yesterday was doing sump sump maintenance i turn all pumps off , cleaning the skimmer pump which was sucking in some cheato. i was at the tank like 20 min. turn everything on .like ive done numerous times before , and all of the sudden . my tank is zipping back and forth the tank on the front glass fins up and shaking is but in the sand, back and forth .... ***

hes been in the tank about 3 months. hes in a 90 gallon. with a small clown and 3 bangais. never done this before. water params are good.

then after the lights went off at night, he just went in his cave like he does every night . this morning the wife said he was at it again ... but not as much...

whats going on ? hes eating , no red or white spots. hes nice and plump.

its like all of the sudden hes threatened or something...
 
My Sailfin did the same thing after I introduced him back in the tank after a Ich outbreak. Never did it before the tank went follow. It got as bad where he was rubbing into rocks and getting cuts.
 
I don't know *** is up with him there's no signs of ick on him or any fish in my tank .

I friend said something about electric current possibly from some equipment possibly failing? Never heard of that before

I had my hand in the tank . The sump and felt nothing ..I really don't know what to think ..

When the lights go out he does not do it.

If there was voltage going through the tank would it not affect the other fish in the tank ? Or are yellow tangs more prone to it?
 
Dunno if it's your problem, but my Linespot wrasse was fighting his reflection on only one side of my tank. I draped a towel over that side only and he stopped. Took it away and a week later he started up again. I did the towel thing again for a few days and that broke his habit.
 
i will try and see what i can do mine zipps down the whole side of the front glass.... i have been attention to him closely cant see anything on him and hes eating, no discloration... really frustrating.

Not a tang, but I had a wrasse do that all the time. Drove me nuts CUZ I thought IT was nuts.

Turns out it was finding all the pods on the glass and eating them.

Regarding the stray voltage I can attest to it affecting some,and not all the fish, all the time. During my tank move, i stuck my hand into one of my holding tanks... Zap!!! I did it multiple times to be sure and each time was a good zap. I felt it Cuz I had cuts on my hand. My other hand i couldn't feel it. The ONLY fish it affected in the tank was a small clown, and the other fish weren't bothered by it. As soon as i isolated it to a powerhead, I removed it and no more.

Btw, the clown was doing the swimming up and down frantically against the glass the whole time. I thought it was stressed from being away from its nem. After that, it swam normally.

Maybe he has reached the age where territory has become important. Maybe your lighting has changed. Whatever, I am guessing he is battling his reflection.

If you turn all the lights on in the room, it may stop.
 
What I mean to say is, just like in your house, when it is dark out and the inside lights are on, you can clearly see your reflection in the window. If the outside gets light, like when it is daylight, your reflection goes away and you just see through the glass. The tank is the same way. When the tank lights are on and the room is dark, the fish can clearly see its reflection. If you turn all the lights on in the room, the reflection goes away. So try turning all the lights on in the room and see if the battling ceases.
 
i will try it out and see as i dont know what else to do at this point. i just hope he stops.i use to enjoy watching him swim through the rock etc, instead of acting like hes fighting the glass and smacking it with his tail.
 
The fish becomes docile when the lights go out because that is its natural night time instinct. I am guessing that the tank may have insufficient natural algae and the tang feels cramped because of lack of grazing opportunities.

Don't stick your hand into a tank you suspect to have stray voltage. If you are grounded and get enough current it will make you muscles cramp and you can't move. Even worse, if the current flows over your heart (eg. left hand in the tank, right leg grounded) it may cause arrhythmia or right away electrocute you. I got shocked severely when stepping bare foot on a saltwater flooded floor with one foot while having the other food grounded and only survived because I fell back on the dry side.

Instead use a voltage checker - one probe in the tank, the other on ground. This will give you a reliable reading.
Wear shoes with rubber soles and avoid touching the water or even the tank.

He gets a ton of nori through the day. He eats like a horse
