The spotlight looks pretty cool.
Were you able to find the spectrum bulbs similar to the Japanese spot lights? Or are you using a traditional US aquarium spectrum?

I wouldnt do 400's unless you needed to raise the pendant really high for a wide spread. Which I could imagine with 40" width.
Personally I'm back to T5's only for awile, several of my sps are having bleaching issues under 250's 10" off the water...

I love the rock work.
The piece projecting through the water surface really compliments the open top.

I agree! I think it would look cool to attach a mangrove or two to the top of some of that live rock that is close to the water surface.

Another compliment on `breaking the barrier' of the water surface ... gives it a totally different look than your average tank.

Then again, I never expected this to be an average tank ... far from it :thumbsup:

I agree peeking over the top is mandatory for an open topped tank. I mounted a green slimer 6" from the surface specifically so it would break the surface.
That's at least a year out from now.

Edward, can you find a source for those Japanese spotlights?

Treg, Im using Iwasaki 20k spotlights. I'll post a pic of it when I get home. I also agree.. 400's would be overkill after seeing this 150w. Im convinced now that it will be 250's for the core.

taco, the japanese lights are very expensive. It will turn you away if you saw the price. For example.. 1 MH equals the same price as 3 you could buy here. Maybe i have a bad source.

I knew I was talking (typing) to someone a while ago about flanking the pendant with IC spots - I just realized it was you. :lol:

So what fixtures are those exactly? I know Skippyreef was gonna use those but ended up not. I was going to buy his spots but totally forgot. That looks really bright man. If you don't mind sharing, I might copy. Although you have much more expensive taste than I do so maybe I can't afford it.

Yeah, those spot lights do get really hot.

The spots are really popular over in Japan right now. Most tanks will have 1 HM and a couple of spots. They use LED lights though. I think thats how they keep down the heat issues.

Edward, Very nice spotlight...I thought the same, theatrical lighting. How is the heat off that puppy? What bulb, ballast are you using with it? I'm drooling over the possibilities of how this tank will look in time. I just can't wait to see .

David, I know between James, Edward, and the countless other awesome tanks I have seen on the boards that reside in Texas that seems to be a hot spot for super sweet tank builds.

Here's a shot of a trimless SPS system in Japan. All the tanks I saw over there were trimless. See the overflow system on the left hand side of the tank? A little different than what we use here, but standard for Japanese tanks.

But as far as the tanks in Texas, I was thinking the same thing. Some of the coolest tanks I have seen are in Texas! :lol:
